Does anyone else spit up Blood and Blood Clots?

Posted by jenjean351 @jenjean351, Feb 8 11:17pm

For past 2 years I’ve have episodes of feeling like I have to clear my throat only to be surprised by blood and blood clots coming up. Each time I get chest XRay. Twice was treated for pneumonia but past 3 times did not have pneumonia.

Amount of blood and clots is increasing and have been referred to Pulmonologist who said I have hemoptysis and is testing for bronchiectasis.

Does anyone else bring up lots of blood unexpectedly like this?

Thanks and glad I found this group!

I've been spitting up clots and blood for years. I'm also on blood thinners, which increases the possibilities for blood. It depends on the amount of blood you bring up. It is scary but, you should check with pulmonologist for amount to be concerned.

I have MAC and bronchiectasis and get blood when I clear my throat. My pulmonologist.recently told me to stop nebulizing 3% saline and stop airway clearance. The blood is the most frightening thing about all this

Yes, the blood really is unsettling! I had to stop any saline as well.
And though this has been happening in episodes over past few years, I’m new to the diagnosis. In fact in waiting room for CT scan right now after a ton of blood work. I guess it’s just part of what we need to do.

In past my primary care doctor assumed it was pneumonia. And I’d get well after 2 weeks of strong antibiotics and then a lot of rest for another month or 2.

I have had many hemoptysis episodes over the past year, not just pink in sputum but many clots that were scary to view the first time it happened. The clots were large and dark red, like maroon, ranging from specks to an inch in size. The coughing covered about 10 minutes so it wasn't just a one cough event. Each time I went to the ER but the fifth time I went the on-duty physician said, after viewing the pictures I had taken, that even though the clots looked scary, it wasn't necessary to go to the ER each time. My episodes were scattered and not pure blood; more like dried blood that had accumulated. These episodes are just part of bronchiectasis (and in my case MAC too).

Each time I have an episode, I take pictures, which I would suggest you do also. Sometimes I've spent hours in the ER when it wasn't necessary. I spent Labor Day weekend in the hospital because the doctors wanted me to have a bronchoscopy but they don't do bronchoscopies on holiday weekends so they kept me until Tuesday, which wasn't what I had in mind for a Labor Day weekend.

Most doctors say that if you are coughing up pure blood of a tablespoon or more that it may indicate a pulmonary embolism and an ER visit would be necessary. I won't be going to the ER anytime soon unless I'm scared I may have an embolism.

One additional thought: I have found I can't use saline and the doctor has told me not to include it in my AC. The saline is too strong and causes a hemoptysis event for me each time. You may want to look at this as a cause of your blood in sputum if you are using saline.

Good lint - no longer using saline since November 2021 thinking that was cause… was sad when had more episodes of blood and blood clots.

It feels as though I have to clear my throat but then it’s all blood.

If taking blood thinners, check with your doctor and see if it can be reduced, changed or eliminated.

Good advice! For me it’s always pure blood and blood clots. Bright red.
Had CT scan with contrast on Friday. Preliminary results show damage in upper and middle right lobes but I don’t have more info till I see pulmonologist for results. Pulmonary embolism was ruled out by CT scan so that is good news. Just not sure what’s going on…
