Doctors claim oxycodone exacerbates pain but nothing else helps

Hello. I have reached out to the forum before on behalf of my best friend with chronic pain and I am back again with another query....
My best friend had yet another upper endoscopy today to attempt to find a cause for the constant and intense abdominal pain that she suffers. She has a long history of food allergies, gastroparesis & other gastro issues spanning most of her 49 years but, several years ago she began a cycle of getting pancreatitis repeatedly with 6-12 months in between. The abdominal pain has never gone away & is so intense that she can no longer work, especially since she had a nerve block a couple of years ago that she claims actually made it worse. She now relies heavily on the oxycodone & it doesn't take her pain completely away but she is able to function at least. It is the ONLY thing that seems to work for her and she hates it because of the side effects.
Today after the latest endoscopy, this doctor joined a series of docs that have suggested that the oxycodone she takes to relieve the pain is actually exacerbating the pain and that she should consider getting off of it. The doctor that renews her prescription for it monthly doesn't seem to see that as an issue & my best friend doesn't know what to do because of course she'd love to get away from the oxy but the pain is too intense without it and no one seems to have an alternative for her.
I guess I came here to ask if anyone else has heard that the opioid they take for pain may be making it worse & if there are non-opioid alternative that actually work for this type of pain.

I tried the oxycodone when I was first diagnosed with cancer. I've been taking hydrocodone for severe back issues for 20 years. The oxycodone didn't do a thing for my pain so I told doctor I wanted to go back to hydrocodone and he added an ER 15mg morphine to take every 12 hours for the bone pain from these WBC booster shots and use the hydrocodone for breakthrough pain every 6 hours. I was taking the hydrocodone every 6 anyway. Can they try her on another pain med?

Tolerance matters. However, I don't think I've ever heard anyone ever complain that Oxycontin made pain worse and can't understand that unless she's having an issue with constipation from it. I wonder how they plan to take her off of her medicines? That's concerning me most of all.

Other countries offer higher dose patches. I would like to see the United States do the same. Buprenorphine is an extremely safe pain medicine.

Patients experience withdrawals from buprenorphine. Buprenorphine can cause respiratory depression and lower blood pressure alone and with particular medications and with alcohol. I appreciate your viewpoint on the higher doses but I would not say buprenorphine is extremely safe pain medication.

Oh she is adamant that there must be a cause for the pain and is vigilant about finding it but she feels that the doctors aren't doing enough to find the cause of the issue. They do endoscopies but never find anything - that is why they claim it has to be the oxy.
One doc has told her that there is a possibility that this pain will never go away - having something to do with the recurring pancreatitis. I honestly think that may be the closest that she ever comes to an answer but she is determined to find a doctor to figure it out. Unfortunately it seems that no one in the medical field in our area shares her fervor to find the solution for her. It has been suggested that she look into palliative care & I personally feel that she should look at a pain management clinic but I believe she thinks that is giving up in a way.
Ideally she would like to be completely healed and able to return to work but right now she is walking with a walker due mostly to the pain.

Have they ruled out chronic pancreatic? That seems the most obvious cause of the pain given her frequent bouts of acute pancreatitis. A gastroenterologist should be able to answer

Suggest following the guidance of the prescribing doctor.

I have chronic pain and a handful of conditions. I get frequent headaches and one of the neurologist I saw said that the Suboxone I am on for chronic pain and the ibuprofen I take is causing me "rebound headaches" and that I need to get off the Suboxone for her to prescribe any medication that would help the chronic migraines. She did refer me to a pain clinic. I get trigger pt injections in my neck back and butt along with Botox for migraines. I have tried to get off the Suboxone but my psoratic arthritis, osteoarthritis in my knees, chronic neck and back pain along with TMJ gets too painful. I have had stomach pains ( usually stabbing pain in abdomen under left side under ribs) for years. Ibuprofen caused gastritis. Only thing that helped with stomach pain was increasing my Zoloft to 100mg after all the tests came back clear for my stomach problems Also miralax twice a day every day helped too.
Hopefully that helped some. You sound like a good friend and she's lucky to have you and your support!

How does suboxone make you feel. I’m concerned about being drowsy from it? Have you ever taken OxyCodone?
If so how do they compare with pain control?
I too have a multitude of chronic pain conditions. Spine/ graves/ diabetes

Look forward to hearing from you.

I read report by doctors in last year and they were laughing at idea of painkillers causing more pain, I agree with those doctors.

Yes, I have been told the same thing and in my experience of having to deal with what I call "fire pain" since '06, all my many pain clinic docs are incorrect, imo. The main problem going on in cases like this is that the docs will not prescribe more adequate pain meds because of all the drug abusers and now the Feds won't let the docs properly help all of us suffering with severe chronic pain unless your a dying cancer patient. I'll call this and say this is my opinion, but I know it to be true, imo.

There are so many treatments for chronic pain that are natural and effective that doctors will never tell you about because they don't know about them. A key one is addressing the mind/body connection because stress and unresolved trauma is a key factor in chronic pain and chronic illness, both as a cause and as a factor in keeping it going however it started. There are also herbal and nutritional therapies, electrical stimulation therapies, biofeedback, neurofeedback, hands on therapies including acupuncture, massage, physical therapy and chiropractic, medical marijuana and kratom, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, red/infrared light therapy and even more. It's interesting that we are all so different in our susceptibility to medications. After my first knee replacement (which had also been my first surgery), they gave me morphine, but I just kept passing out with the pain. The morphine did not help my pain one bit. The strange thing is, that codeine ended up being the pain medication that allowed me to even be upright and conscious. Apparently codeine becomes morphine in your system. Strange. But after not being able to even be awake and conscious, it was the codeine that allowed me to function. A nurse was looking at me sideways when I came to, and she was so excited. She literally exclaimed, "Oh thank God - codeine works for you!" Since then, of course, that has been the only medication that deals with severe pain for me. But an internal medicine doc suggested that it was the cause of my stomach problems and constipation. One thing I have found that helps with that now is celery!!!! Not only does it help clear my system, it's also a natural anti-inflammatory!!! If I eat two or three celery stalks (I try to find organic, and usually can) per day, my system seems to work just fine. Good luck!!!!
