Which doctor is responsible for follow up after Ileostomy surgery?
My husband had an emergency Ileostomy on August 7 by an emergency physician. He never had a physician associated with this health problem. My question is, do you have a physician dedicated to monitor the health and well being of the stoma, rashes, vitamin deficiency, loss of weight, appetite, etc.? If so we need to know why type of specialty doctor this would be. Thank you.

Thanks Laura for update
Hope all goes well and you both get answers so you can move forward.--hope the monitor will give you good answers.
Take care

In March 2020 I had Ovarian Cancer, major surgery - complete debunk of ovaries etc, chemo and then Olaparib for two years.
In March 2024 I was diagnosed with secondary Ovarian Cancer and had major bowel surgery, resulting in one part of my bowel completely blocked off and a permanent Ileostoma. Since then I have had Kidney Stone surgery, and about a month ago an inflamed gall bladder (which seems to have come right).
Before all my 2024 surgery I weighed about 69kg, but now I am just over 53 kg and I don't seem to be able to put on any extra weight.
I eat well - breakfast, morning tea, lunch and dinner and my meals are nourishing and sizeable. I also drink plenty of water and fluids. I have also tried a couple of good quality Sustagens but these work through my digestive system within half an hour so I stopped them. I walk every day.
Is there anything I can do to add any extra weight?
I’d make an appt with a dietician that deals with ileostomies.
I work with a virtual ostomy dietitian and she has taught me SO much in this first year of my ileostomy and she actually HAS an ostomy with the degrees to support her. She’s simply amazing! If anyone wants her contact information, let me know. I’ll post it. Yvette
Thank you. I have an appointment with the Ostomy Clinic here in Tucson December 20 and hope that Ashley will be able to help with the continued weight loss and lack of appetite. Bill will also be seen by a Gastroenterologist - hopefully soon. He was hospitalized Monday with what was a minor stroke. He's home now. Home health care will call probably Monday to set up appointments for physical therapy etc.
That's in the works. The appointment with the Ostomy Clinic is December 20. Ashley will either give us the information or refer us to a specialist as you suggested. Thank you.
Wow, you've been through a lot. Losing weight just adds to the stress. I hope to address this with our Ostomy Clinic and the gastroenterologist. Hope my husband and you find a way out of this problem.
@lauramae3, I wonder if it might be helpful to start a list of questions as you prepare for the appointment with the Ostomy Clinic on the 20th. Maybe you could share your questions with the group and helpful members can add the thoughts.
Here are a few that I thought of:
- How often do we need follow-up appointments?
- Who should I contact when I have questions?
- Who to contact in an urgent or emergency situation?
- What do I need to know, but haven't asked?
What would you add?
I wrote all of you very good questions down on the appointment sheet along with the losing weight and appetite issues. Thank you very much!!! Laura
