Do You Need Skin Removal Surgery due to weight loss?
I’m interested in hearing from those who either have had skin removal surgery, due to substantial weight loss or feel they may need it in the future. I have lost 70 pounds so far and have 20-30 pounds to go….and I’m seeing loose skin that is bothersome. I’ve heard that for those over 50, it’s more problematic. I’m thrilled with my weight loss, but the skin is something I don’t I can tolerate.
Does insurance cover it? Hmmm….any information from those who have had it is appreciated. (Full disclosure, I haven’t had bariatric surgery, but this forum seems like the right place for the discussion.)

If I win the mega million or power ball, I will be calling the plastic surgeon about skin removal, but odds of that happening are very slim.
My understanding is that insurance companies will not cover skin removal unless there are medical issues, wounds or excessive skin that interferes with their daily lives.
After I had surgery; I lost over 100 lbs in my 50s, nothing tightened back up. So around 65, I had a neck and lower face lift to get rid of all the sagging skin. I paid for it out of pocket. Some was genetic, my mom had same turkey neck, some was from weight loss. The rest of my sagging skin I can cover up with clothes.
I did get an estimate for my upper arms, but doubt I will do. It does bother me when wearing sleeveless and short sleeve tops.
What area are you most concerned about?

Thanks for your input and congratulations on your weight loss! Right now, I want to address my neck. Just under the chin. It’s not that noticeable, so I think I may be able to minimize it with needling. A friend had that and it looks good. I have to get it evaluated. It may require surgery.
I also want to address my lower abdomen. It has a little divot in the center snd sags a little. I can’t see any option but surgery for it, My upper abdomen is ok.
My DDD breast need an uplift. I’ve consulted with a plastic surgeon about it before and he said I’d need implants too! Scared me off. Anyway, I can’t live with them this saggy. I am nervous about losing nipple sensitivity.
My upper arms are a little concerning, but they are something I can live with.
I lost weight for heath reasons, but I want to look good too. Naked. Lol.
I lost 140 pounds with RNY and had rolls of loose skin
I was getting open wounds under the rolls. My insurance first declined to pay
But they were ordered to pay by state insurance dept upon my appeal
I had it done before approval at a teaching hospital. It was much cheaper
Hospital was required to reimburse me for the money I paid them

You may want to look into insurance paying for breast reduction if "medically necessary". It depends if weight of breast causing neck and back problems and amount of breast being reduced. If keeping size, but just lifting, it would be considered cosmetic.
Great idea! I have had recent neck pain….my primary referred me for artery screening due to my family history. I hadn’t considered it from my breast! Omg…I’ve had back pain too, but ignored it because I have so much going on. I’ll have to address this. Thanks!
How would you describe your surgery recovery and how many did you have?
I had one major one. Cut all the way around and woke up with four drains
They looked like pineapples
Had to empty them
Was not expecting that but a week goes by quick and they were removed. Would do it again in a heartbeat. Amazing results
How did you select the surgeon and did insurance pay anything?
I used a surgeon recommended by a friend and had it at Nassau University
Medical center on Long Island. It was done by a Plastic surgeon
Price was approx $4000 because it is a teaching hospital
Omg! That’s amazing! I’ve been looking at prices at a local plastic surgeon’s office and it’s outrageous. Clearly, it would cost me $100,000. To address all my needs. That’s just not a viable option.
I think I’ll try Duke. I am a Duke patient.
