Do you have to wean yourself off of Eliquis?

Posted by lafama37 @lafama37, Jul 8, 2023

In Jan 2023 I was diagnosed with a PE in my right lung. The hospital assigned me a Pulmonologist and I have never been impressed with his practice. He is rude and doesn't answer my quests. Unfortunately I live in a small town with just a few options. I saw him yesterday for my 6 month appt and instead of answering my quests I was told that I worry too much and to stop taking the Eliquis as I do not need it anymore. I told him that I still have my legs swollen and have lower leg tingling and numbness in my toes and was told to keep on taking the thinners if thats what I want to. . What will you do? As I said to find another Pulmonologist in my area is almost impossible. Have you had side effects after suddenly stop taking Eliquis?

Hematology md might be the best md to consult when and if to stop blood thinners. (Most Hematologist are also oncology mds just as fyi)
If there is none in your area (although now telehealth is a way to go and you can do video visit practically with anyone across the world as a consult), then your primary md is a good one to consult as well.
Pulmonologist probably doesnt want to deal with your questions about eliquis as you are outside of acute stage and there is no danger to your lungs now, so its not really his specialty, yet he is somewhat right about 6 months for blood thinners after PE.
With regards to your other symtpms - legs swelling, thingling, please reach out to your primary md, i doubt blood thinners are addressing your current symotoms.

I am not an md, i have doctorate in Physical Therapy and on the personal level has been on every signle blood thinner past 20+ years for blood clotting disorder.
Please consult your md.
Good luck,
Lena
