Dizziness

I'm sorry you are experiencing this! I'm 80 and also have dizziness. However, I saw my doctor when it first started just to be sure what was really going on. In my case, it's just a situation that occurs with age. But it might be a good idea to see your doctor about it even though you have no symptoms.
A few things that helps me control my dizziness is to drink a lot of water and also to not get up quickly from a sitting position. Also don't turn quickly.

amyashling, pressure in your sinuses can cause such a thing, even when you don't feel the pressure. Imbalance in the cervical neck can also cause this sensation and you may not feel it unless you turn your neck even in some small way. I see chiropractors (a lot) for relief.

I am sorry for those of you experiencing dizziness. My problem is balance. When I walk, the feeling of falling to the side makes me want to grab onto something for help. My sinuses are frequently "clogged up". Especially at night. I find it difficult to breathe through my nose. I have developed a routine of irrigating my sinuses with one of those Navage-like devices. Then a couple of sprays of fluticasone propionate. This usually clears out the sinuses so I can get a decent night's sleep. The balance problem is ongoing with ENT telling me to just keep spraying. That seems to be the conventional wisdom here in my city. Medicate, medicate, medicate..

@heisenberg34 I am going through the same imbalance problems. It's not vertigo but just as awful! Feel like I am going to fall over. But my ENT performed a myringotomy (without tubes) and injected liquid steroids into my inner ear through my eardrum. Just had my third injection on Monday (one each week) and crossing my fingers because I feel much better, but time will tell. May need a 4th one next week. The Navage device is just a temporary clearing of nostril passages and the Flonase did absolutely nothing for me after 6 weeks of use. I am told this is either a stubborn inner ear inflammation which in turn inflames my eustachian tube or possibly Menier's Disease. In any event, your ENT telling you to "just keep spraying" is concerning to say the least. I found an awesome ENT after being quite dissatisfied and depressed from prior experience with a different ENT. I feel so sorry for you because I know exactly what you are going through. It is a horrible way to live. I wake up each day wondering if I can walk, drive or be joyful this day. But the injections are promising. I was told from the beginning that it may taken 1, 2, 3 or even 4 injections to find relief. Everyone is different. Even if I feel better, I am going to get a 4th injection to be sure. I am so grateful I feel better at the moment! Hope this helps you!

@amyashling I get that too, but in my case I chalk it up to inner ear fluid imbalance or a new medication/supplement I have started. That has been my experience but a referral to an ENT to rule out anything serious would help, I’m sure.

My latest bouts of dizziness were caused by Prednisolone eye drops which was prescribed after a minor in office laser eye procedure, and more recently when I used a topical called Icey Heat roll on for my knee arthritis. Dizzyness stopped when I stopped using the Prednisolone and Icey Heat. Seems my body is very sensitive to most medications/supplements.

@rashida Good luck in finding an ENT who is willing to take a deep dive into your problem. Please let us know how you make out. The mantra here in my Delaware medical community is "medicate, medicate, medicate"! No "let's try something else" or "I'm going to refer you to (fill in the blank). My ENT just says, in response to my sinus issues, "Spray more Flonase into your nose". Instead, I bought one of those Navage-like sinus machines. It does a great job in clearing out my sinuses. Add to that a couple of sprays of Flonase in each nostril. I'm set for clear breathing all night long.

I 've gotten dizzy spells on and off for years starting at age 25 and I'm now 77. Mine seem to be directly related to allergies, hayfever sinus drainage specifically. I believe it's all related to fluid in my inner ear. Mine can be severe. I have mild spells to begin with which warn me to take anti-histamines. Unfortunetly new age, safer anti-histamines do not help me, so I take chlorpheniramine malate, cm, a cheap old school anti-histamine with the same long term side effects as benadryl, but the cm doesn't make me sleepy. At the start of a spell I am warned when one will strike in a few seconds because I get a pleasurable feeling, and a light ringing in my ears which gives me enough time to grab hold of support or sit down. If driving I pull over because I become slightly paralized because my brain slows down. If I try to live with these light spells and not take cm then the spells become more severe lasting for a few minutes.

@ejbb Thanks for getting back to me. So glad you have found an ENT who has the foresight to look into other options. These injections sound promising. Good luck! My imbalance is likely related to my neuropathy. I just began doing exercises to help with poor balance. As usual I did this based upon my own research.

@gardeningjunkie is chlorpheniramine malate, cm the actual label name? Do you need a prescription for it or can you get it over the counter?

I am in Canada and I notice certain medications available over the counter in the States or elsewhere do not require a prescription whereas in Canada they do - and vice versa.

@heisenberg34 I have no problem breathing - just the tinnitus I have had for as long as I remember, and occasional dizzy spells often within taking certain medications or even supplements.

In Ontario, Canada, the mantra is the same as in Delaware! lol. The first thing I am asked ant every appointment is whether I have a drug plan. When I say I don’t their interest definitely wanes! 😄

Each time I am referred to a specialist I brace myself for that. Surprisingly, I have come across some who don’t push drugs but I suspect they have been warned by my family doctor that I resist taking medications so they just write me off as a lost cause because of my history of fighting against prescriptions. lol. I feel some won’t even accept a referral from my family doctor for this reason.
