DISH (diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis) or Forestier's

I would like to connect with someone with DISH disease. I saw one post about someone recently diagnosed with this, but can't find it again.

@rebecca66

For years I was told my pain was fibromyalgia but after having Covid the pain in my body hit hard and a year after Covid I could not turn my head to check traffic. Made an appointment with a neurosurgeon had X-ray on my spine and was diagnosed with DISH. I never stopped working in the garden, walked two miles five days a week, did very heavy lifting. Painted and wall papered my home was always active while I believed it was fibromyalgia. Now it’s a new disease and is coming on fast. Not sure if Covid had anything to do with it but my pain has been bad since Covid. I still work in the garden but no longer plant huge bushes because of pain. I do believe heavy work for years took its toll on my body.

I would be willing to talk chat with you. I was diagnosed three years ago and symptoms are becoming difficult to deal with.

Hi Becky. It seems like a good part of my day is researching DISH. It’s mainly in my thoracic spine. All the discs have been fused. Sometimes the upper back pain is unbearable. It recently traveled to my ankles. My doctor took me off of Oxycodone and now I’m on pain patches. I get about 80% pain relief. It’s so frustrating looking for a doctor/physical therapist who is knowledgeable and can offer some treatment. Frustrated with the whole thing, but want to go forward and have some quality of life.

Hi Becky ...what type of meds do they have you on. I take one tramadol per day and 1/2 an Oxy usually for the pain when it hits me up in back of neck and skull. I am 80 yrs old now and had to stop playing golf as it kills me to turn my neck and head swinging at the ball.

Hi Lee. For pain I apply a pain patch called Buprenorphine 10 mcg. It’s good for one week and gives me about 70% pain relief. I also take oxy and muscle relaxers for breakthrough pain rarely. I live in Michigan for the summers and Tucson for the rest of the year. I find the humidity in MI is killing me. I take a 40 walk each day with pain. My pain is primarily in my upper back. Entire thoracic spine is fused because of DISH. It’s a nasty disease and at times it’s hard to wrap my head around it. It is now in my ankles and getting worse. Not sure what I’ll do if I can’t take my walks. I’m trying to find a PT who can use some gentle modalities. Not an easy task. I’m also seeing an orthopedic surgeon at U of M in august as I haven’t had any images in three years. I desperately need to lose weight…..big factor is DISH. I hope you have a nice holiday weekend (as much as you are able). I try to keep a positive attitude, but it’s difficult at times.
