Type 2 diabetes & questions about how to better manage diet

Posted by nancywhite @nancywhite, Oct 25, 2016

Started with Metformin and had intense diarrhea and lost a lot of weight. Dr changed me to Januvia and it seems to be easier on my body and AC has come down to almost normal. Any suggestions how to better manage diet?

Hi @maurtura,
I noticed that you've been supporting others and getting support in the Diabetes group, but that you also asked about heart issues. Did you know that we have a Heart Health group here on Connect: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/heart-blood-vessel-conditions/

I encourage you to check out all the discussions there, but direct you specifically to this one where you'll connect with others who have a pacemaker:

@maurtura Thanks for letting us know that you are having problems with our posts. Please let us know what terms you are referring to - I'm sure that we can explain it better if that is needed:) Teresa

Maurtura,
Those of us who have been to way too many doctor visits and procedures are often guilty of using medical jargon that sounds like a foreign language to new members. If you have specific questions, please ask and we will all try to use the simplest terms in our explanations.

I have reversed my diabetes. No medication. A1C was 8.5 now 5.4. I follow the Wheat Belly way of eating. No sugar no grains. I feel great again.

Wheat Belly is a way of eating developed by Dr. Davis a cardiologist. It eliminates all grains and sugars. He has several books out and can be followed on Facebook. My A1C has been under 6 for 4 years with no medication.

I stuck with the "Wheat Belly" way of eating. No grains and no sugar. My doctor was amazed. Dr, Davis runs a detox program on Facebook to get you started. It is easy for me now.

I didn't start with meds. I didn't give up anything except my hobby of baking for my family. Then I chose foods i like that are good for me. I read the labels and stick to 15 grams, more or less, for a serving. I never looked at another candy bar or potato chips. I eat my birthday cake, one piece and then the family eats the rest. Fortunately I love vegetables and am always trying new recipes. I throw extra veggies into my basic recipes. Onion and garlic are my favorite flavorings. I am eating less beef these days from locally raised beef that is butchered to my directions and I share it with my family. I love fish but want it wild and from safer waters. It is a positive thing, not a sacrifice. Once in a while I think about baking peanut butter or oatmeal cookies. It is a nice memory.
Also, my diabetic son says that carrot cake is a vegetable. But the icing is not. I like my cooking and only cook for me now. That makes it easier. Dorisena
