Dental work while taking Tymlos?

Posted by shocknot26 @shocknot26, May 22 10:07am

Is there risk with the anabolic medications like there is with the biophosphonates (of ONJ or other issues) when getting dental work? I need to start Tymlos, and am being told conflicting answers. Does anyone have personal experience with this? I have actually seen some studies that being on Tymlos during a procedure can actually help the jaw bone (which might make sense bc isn’t it supposed to help grow bone?). Such confusing information out there. Yes, I am asking all my doctors and dentists too;) Thanks!

@btichy change of protocol for Tymlos. You can stay on it indefinitely. I use half a dose and I saw improvement in my DEXA scan.

Thanks for posting. How long have you been on Tymlos and what are your side effects? I struggle now with controlled hypertension, hypothyroidism, controlled statin use , anxiety and sleep disorder. I hear you lose hair and gain weight. I’m on weight watchers too! Please advise. What will you do after Tymlos. I am limited bc I am at risk for MRONJ and don’t want to take a chance

@gently I really appreciate all your information sharing. May I ask how long you have been on this journey? You are helping me (and it seems so many others) who are just starting this way forward. Thank you!

@shocknot26, it really started with my mom. She had three hour pamidronate infusions while we watched anxiously for Forteo approval. In 2002 she started the injection that would stop her fractures and give her some relief from the pain of the thoracic fracture. She and her endocrinologist tricked me into having a Dexa scan at 50 years and I watched my T score diminish over the next years. I became aggressive at research and fascinated with bones. I needed medication at sixty seven, but was side tracked by illness of other family members and then my own wild ride with cancer. At 71 I started Forteo with my mom's endocrinologist.
I enjoy this forum. If any thing I write helps, I'm very happy.

@gently if you were 57, had a fall, fractured L1, with a DEXA in the osteopenia range that was decreasing each DEXA, would you start Tymlos or Forteo? Do you think it smart to tackle it NOW when younger? For longevity?

shocknot,
how long ago was the fracture at L1. Do you know if it's a compression, chance or traverse fracture.
I think it is better to address bone loss early if you are taking an anabolic. It is easer to prevent bone loss than to recover lost bone. You are at the age of maximum bone loss for most women.
I favor Forteo because it is known to reduce the pain of fractures.
The spinal cord ends at about L1 and transition bundle of nerves called the cauda equina. It can be significant to stabilize a fracture at L1 to avoid damage to this bundle of nerves. A spinal fracture still under stress from weight and movement can continue to compress or rotate.
Forteo could be a better choice than Tymlos because you are less likely to have side effects.
Tymlos is thought to have slightly better bmd increases in the hip, but equal to Forteo in the spine.
Either is a good choice.
I do think it smart to strengthen our bones early to preserve the joys of longevity.

@gently I fractured on 4/16, so coming up on 8 weeks. It’s a 25% compression fracture. I really appreciate your insights and thanks so much about being so open to share.

I have stenosis and disk issues in my back and neck. And scoliosis I do go to chiropractor for treatment. He’s aware of the conditions. Do compression fractures cause pain?

@ipg yes. This is the worst pain I have ever endured. It is maddening. The worst part is how LONG it takes. Complete life stopping injury. I never want another and plan to do whatever it takes not to.

So sorry. Pain is awful What meds will you be taking for osteoporosis?. Right now even with -2.9 in 2024 I am joining a gym and taking Fortibone will reassess in 2027. Have a risk of MRONJ been evaluated by oral surgery who promotes “good oral hygiene” but that doesn’t tell it all.

@ipg not sure quite yet. Leaning toward Tymlos for quite a few reasons. I am a firm believer in everything natural whenever possible, but it seems this is beyond only going holistic. I think I plan to do both the medicine and the holistic remedies as best I can. Once I heal! Right now it’s only about making sure I do my absolute best to heal this thing! I have spoken to all my regular docs and dentists and several others too. I too was and will continue to be very concerned about dental health (hence my original post question), and am relieved and confident that I can have safe dental while taking the bone building meds like Tymlos and Forteo. It’s after that when it gets even more challenging in that area. I am reading as much as I can (I am stuck sitting here healing anyway 😞🤪). I am finding the most difficult part is that every single one of us is so individual. So one path is not fit all; you need to weigh everything and decide what’s best for you as an individual. I trust my endocrinologist with my life (has helped me through some other challenging things) so after all my questions are answered, I will move forward. Most likely with Tymlos and a BoneFit PT holistic instructor, once I am cleared by orthopedic surgeon. I am thinking this should address everything from all angles. Meds, vitamins, nutrition, exercise—all geared toward best bone health. Good luck to you!
