Dehydration: What helps maintain hydration with bowel issues?
Any ideas of what can help with dehydration? I have short gut syndrome and get dehydrated a lot. According to a GI specialist plain water can make me more dehydrated. Fluids need to have sodium and glucose in them for my body to absorb.
I get constipated a lot when I get dehydrated.
Recently I started drinking coconut water and it's been helping my constipation.
I have 2ft. of my small intestines left,I have my large intestines still.
I am able to eat most foods. My diet has been high carbs,high protein low fiber. I need to gain weight also.

Yes, I’ve been having some dehydration problems as well. I think when I take out my daily fresh ginger tea I go through dehydration. I would suggest stay with the coconut water. Add some fresh ginger, tea, and any of the other great suggestions until you find that right combination

Scans have showed dilated small intestines which could be from a partial small bowel obstruction. Doctors still don't seem very concern about the results.

Adding electrolytes to your fluids is a matter of homeostasis that our bodies require. They are an intricate part of what keeps our hearts ticking too. Buying electrolyte water from stores can be iffy and reading the labels are important. As an example what WholeFoods sells as Alkaline & Electrolyte Water contains (purified water, potassium bicarbonate and magnesium sulfate) only. I buy from The Vitamin Shop BodyTech Liquid Electrolytes Hydration which provides (magnesium 45mg, chloride 375mg, sodium 100mg, potassium 150 mg, sulfate 20mg). The WF bottle does not offer a breakdown of vitamin contents. I put 1/2 tsp in 32 ounces water per day. This is why it’s important to read labels.

I drink fluids with electrolytes in them. My fluids are to have sodium and glucose in them. I don't drink plain water. My chloride is already high according to my blood work.
I had 5 ft. of my ileum removed about 5 years ago and am considered to have borderline short bowel syndrome ( I am not kn TPN but have digestive issues). I was told after having that emergency surgery that I should drink an oral rehydration solution for the rest of my life and minimal plain water. Pedialyte is perfect, but spendy. I make my own version by adding 2 Tbsp sugar and 3/4 tsp salt to 32 ounces of water (I add one packet of True Lemon to improve the taste). This has served me well as I have never been hospitalized for dehydration :). There are other recipies out there, too, but this is my favorite and it is simple.

2 Reactions@jlstjohn I have an ileostomy and hydration can be an issue (no colon). I mix powdered Gatorade up 1/4 to 1/3 strength, and that works well for me. It tastes a bit like ocean water, but not too bad.

1 Reaction@beejenigma I have heard that squeezing fresh lemon into water is a nice kidney-friendly way to hydrate…some types of tea are better than others, maybe worth checking out the most kidney-friendly ones… watermelon is also supposed to be a kidney friendly way to hydrate- love it cold on hot summer days .
