Dehydration: What helps maintain hydration with bowel issues?

Posted by tjanet @tjanet, Nov 13, 2024

Any ideas of what can help with dehydration? I have short gut syndrome and get dehydrated a lot. According to a GI specialist plain water can make me more dehydrated. Fluids need to have sodium and glucose in them for my body to absorb.
I get constipated a lot when I get dehydrated.
Recently I started drinking coconut water and it's been helping my constipation.
I have 2ft. of my small intestines left,I have my large intestines still.
I am able to eat most foods. My diet has been high carbs, high protein low fiber. I need to gain weight also.

Had endoscopy with Botox for gastroparisis one week ago and have had upset stomach, burning pain in stomach, weakness, and even nutrition drinks upset my stomach. Has anyone ever had this treatment and experienced the same symptoms.

I suffer from that as well as low potassium. I mix unsweetened coconut water with either water or unsweetened ice tea. I can tell when I'm dehydrated when I start feeling like I just woke up from anesthesia.

Doctors still don't know how to treat my health conditions. My health conditions are getting worse but it seems that my doctors don't seems to care. It is getting harder to live alone. I can't tell a difference from doing IV fluids.

To avoid sugar or chemical sweeteners, I add electrolyte drops to a glass of water every day. There are several brands on the market. Just check their sourcing and precautions to avoid contaminates, since some of them come from a natural source, like a salt lake.

I became dehydrated and ended up in the ER. The doctor recommended adding electrolytes to my water daily. There are many brands of electrolytes and flavors. I drink 16oz. of water with electrolytes and then all other water without. I also drink coconut water due to natural electrolytes in it. And same as others stated, I get constipated without enough fluids. It’s become routine for me now to have electrolytes daily.
