Dehydration: What helps maintain hydration with bowel issues?

Posted by tjanet @tjanet, Nov 13 1:03pm

Any ideas of what can help with dehydration? I have short gut syndrome and get dehydrated a lot. According to a GI specialist plain water can make me more dehydrated. Fluids need to have sodium and glucose in them for my body to absorb.
I get constipated a lot when I get dehydrated.
Recently I started drinking coconut water and it's been helping my constipation.
I have 2ft. of my small intestines left,I have my large intestines still.
I am able to eat most foods. My diet has been high carbs, high protein low fiber. I need to gain weight also.

I play golf 2-3Xs weekly in Florida & work out in the yard several times a week. There is a product on Amazon called TRACE Minerals Power Pack (Electrolyte Stamina), naturally flavored and low in sugar.

Speedbird,
Thanks for this, I will definitely be looking into it. I sweat to beat the band, even on 3-4 mile walks in the winter. When wearing a hat, I come home and my hair is soaked. Seems like the older I get the harder it is to hold on to those electrolytes. Going to Amazon now. Thanks

Ok maybe you need to look at another product. I am diabetic and the reduced sugar in Trace work for me!

I have tried drinking Gatorade but it doesn't seem to help with my dehydration. I found that coconut water with a little added 100% fruit juice helps better than Gatorade.

I don't drink plan coconut water. I mix it with a little 100% fruit juice.
I have tried drinking gatorade, liquid IV and other hydration drinks but it seems that coconut water with a little fruit juice helps me the most. Plain water does the less for me.
I don't drink coconut water fast,I take sips not drink it all at once.
