New routes and wayfinding: What’s ahead this month for downtown Rochester
Near the West Parking Ramp (Ramp 9), directional signage will soon shift in preparation for a new patient route to the ramp due to underground utility work shifting south. Beginning at 4 p.m. on Dec. 30, First Street Northwest will reopen, while the closure on Fifth Avenue Northwest will move south, closing West Center Street at the intersection of Fifth Avenue. Access to the West Parking Ramp entrance will remain open from the north. The new routing will remain in effect until fall 2026.
With new routing for patients and staff scheduled to take effect midday, Mayo teams are working to provide clear arrival guidance that goes beyond standard detour signage.
Digital, physical and personal wayfinding support
Over a year ago, Mayo Clinic launched a Rochester Construction Updates website to help patients plan their visits. Updates are shared through multiple touchpoints, like the Patient Appointment Guide, Patient Portal, pre-appointment texts, and conversations with pre-appointment staff.
However, the need for guidance doesn't end once patients and staff arrive on campus. To promote a smoother arrival experience from all directions, Mayo Clinic teams have partnered with the City of Rochester and construction crews to coordinate wayfinding strategies for the many patients, staff, visitors, and community members who make their way into downtown Rochester.
Downtown wayfinding relies on these three key elements:
++Blue directional signage clearly points patients and visitors to common destinations as routing and detours shift.
++Digital signage installed on high-traffic routes can be updated instantly to direct traffic for both short-term and long-term detours.
++Flaggers stationed at key intersections during peak traffic hours help to identify and solve immediate problems, offer guidance and assist pedestrians as well as drivers.
