Dealing with a Spouse with a “Mild Cognitive Impairment”

Posted by tryingtimes10 @tryingtimes10, Dec 31, 2024

My husband was diagnosed with MCI in 2019. He is pretty independent, just forgetful of time, dates, location of places, anything electronic & events from our life together (we’ve been married 52 years). It’s all just getting to me. I find myself wanting to be alone so I’m not continuously reminded of these changes. Because my friends/family are out of state, working, or involved with their own families, I really have no one to talk to so I’m seeing a therapist twice a week to deal with the sadness, anger, grief I have over his condition. I just wonder if other women find themselves in this position & how they are dealing with it.

@randyreg Yes, my husband and I attended the HABIT program (Scottsdale) in 2019. It was great being around people who were going through the same situation and understood.

Thank you for your response. The general online information from Mayo sounds attractive and useful but specifics seem to be lacking. Much of the info is from 2017, 2018 but I'm seeking detailed specifics: When are classes held? How to sign up? Cost? et al. Perhaps I am missing something or looking in the wrong place. My wife was diagnosed with MCI at Mayo (Rochester) in March of '26.

@randyreg Have you tried just calling the main number at the Clinic? Good luck; it would be a positive experience for both of you.

@randyreg We live in Jacksonville, FL and are signed up to take the HABIT program in the fall. My husband has Alzheimer’s and we first attended an info class in the spring and are very impressed with it’s structure, although the hardest part for us will be getting him ready for the 9AM start time. I am looking into a hotel by Mayo for the first couple of nights to get us acclimated to the program.
Here are the numbers of each area for HABIT:
AZ: (480)301-7432
FL: (904)953-8853
MIDWEST:(608)392-9555
I hope this helps and we are all on this journey together.

Thank you! I've spoken to Mayo (Rochester) and we (my wife and I) are entering the HABIT process. In the mid-west the classes are held in Lacrosse WI, which is a bit closer to the UP of Michigan. I've read numerous books, from Mayo, regarding Dem/Alz but the "Mayo Connect" support / information site is golden.

Thank you. I called Mayo direct and we are now on the path for the HABIT classes (in the mid-west held in La Crosse, WI). Suspect the classes are popular and focused as there are some hoops to jump through prior to acceptance.

@randyreg Very happy to hear this! Being from Chicago originally, I know where LaCrosse is, and my brother lived in the UP several years ago.
Yes, I would try to sign up ASAP. Ours had a waiting list in Florida, and you probably would like to get in before the snow flies.😊
