Coughing up blood with mucus

Posted by ReRE @jcwest211, Nov 13, 2023

I have bronchiectasis & MAC. I recently moved to Florida and have noticed an increase in coughing and mucus. I noticed a small amount of blood in mucus last couple of days. I went to the ER at TGH and ER doctor ruled out pneumonia and pulmonary embolism. He said coughing up blood with bronchiectasis can happen.
Has anyone experienced this?

Yes, I have been coughing blood up with sputum about every 3 years for 13 years. Otherwise no coughing. But this past August I coughed up pure blood for 60 hours. I went in for a pulmonary embolization but it couldn't be done due to blockage. I opted to not do antibiotics and have been watching diet and taking supplements. 3 months and no blood. I suggest you see a new pulmonologist. Mine had me in for testing the same day.

Thank you @janemiller for your reply. I failed to mention that I had a chest Xray in the ER and there was no pulmonary embolism, blockage or pneumonia. I have reached out to my infection disease doctor/pulmonologist for further guidance.

I also had a ct scan with contrast. I did not have an embolism. My Dr just wanted the bleeding to stop. It stopped on it's own. I would check your showerhead. Southern coastal states have higher mac rates.

Coughed up blood this morning. Last night used the Smartvest and flutter valve for airway clearance. Woke up at 6:30 am cleared my throat and blood came up. Hasn’t happened since 4/8/2023

Yes. I cough blood with sputum. My pulmonologist says color and size determine if a ER visit is necessary. Any continuous amount larger than a tablespoon and dark red signals a visit to ER. A smaller amount and light red in color signal a broken blood vessel possibly caused my cough or an on coming infection. The need to monitor is important. When I cough blood light in color, I reduce saline treatments and just use the vest. If it persists, a call to doctor for antibiotic is needed.
I had a CAT scan once for a possible embolism when the color of blood was very dark. There was no sigh of an embolism but there was relief.
Good luck.

Scratching my head as to how you would know which side it’s coming from….

Thanks for posting this Rick. Answered my questions regarding coughing up blood yesterday. I called and left messages for both my pulmonologist and ID Dr , neither returned my calls.
