Cough With Excessive Mucus Something New To Me…
Since the beginning of the year, I have had a cough that is producing lots of mucus. I have never experienced this before. My coughs were always dry. I don’t have a post nasal drip.
The amount of mucus has reached a point where I am gagging and having to “vomit” to get rid of it. This is extremely distressing! This morning was particularly bad so I’m grateful that I am home.
I do have seasonal allergies so I’ve been taking 2 Guaifenesin 400 mg. a day for years. I guess they are not helping me now.
I also use a steroid nasal spray, and salt water rinse in my nose.
I don’t know why my lungs are producing so much mucus. I’m going for my annual physical next month and of course I will ask my doctor. I wanted to see if anyone here has any recommendations.
Thank you!

I would recommend seeing a lung doctor if you are bringing up a lot of mucus. A chest xray is usually done fist then additional tests as needed. I have had a lung condition since I was a young child and usually lots of sputum means an infection which may meed antibiotic treatment so it does not do damage to the lungs. Have you had any pain in the chest or back?
@britnoor thanks
I’m going to my PCP next week . I’ve got several things going on right now and this is one.
I suggest you see a Lung specialist . You need together a Ct scan and breathing tests to see what is going on with your lungsGood luck
I have bronchiectisis have had MAC in the past. Just got over Covid about 5 weeks ago. Had influenza A last December with a bad cough ever since lungs just never popped back. After Covid had copious amount of sputum , was on an Abx and duoneb breathing Tx it has helped. Sputum is less, cough is less and sputum is clear.
