COPD and Can’t Commit to Quitting Smoking

Posted by peacelovejoy @peacelovejoy, Jul 16, 2023

I was diagnosed with COPD a year ago and have made efforts to stop smoking but I keep buying cigarettes. I have quit for a couple of days at a time and keep going back. I don’t want to let go of smoking because I can’t handle the stresses in my life. I know continuing to smoke will make my life worse but I feel like I just don’t care in the one hand and to no avail keep telling myself I’m going to be even more miserable if I don’t stop. Has anyone else gone through this?

I quit smoking in 1989. It's one of the hardest things I've ever done. What finally helped me to quit was the patch and some low thc Marijuana. I didn't want to get high all the time and had the opportunity to buy some home grown. Whe I felt like I just HAD to smoke I puffed on that. The patch gave enough nicotine to slowly quit. Not sure if this will help you but thc cuts anxiety as well.

Has the marijuana become addictive? I quit smoking and started dipping, using smokeless tobacco, now I'm having gum disease and I would like to quit that, thank you

Yes and still am. Unfortunately, cigarettes comfort me (only in my head) while I know they are making my condition worse. Keep trying is all I can say. Best of luck.

Today is 22 days in the hospital and I am wearing the patch and I really don't have the cravings too smoke. After I get released to go home I'm gonna continue with the patch because it has helped me through these days. I want to put smoking behind me
I know it's gonna be hard but I know it will take time. God bless you. Thank you

I send you hope and health . Hang on !! You are doing it !! I inspired myself by trying to get rid of the cigarette smell . I washed my clothes , my ashtrays, washed myself and anything that had to do with it . One day you might try to do a bit of time without the patch. Wait tho until you are strong and brave!!! Bless you , I am proud for you!! Crystalina

Chantix fortunately made it easy for me to quit the 2 packs a day 15 years ago. Couldn't have without it. The nice thing about it, is it also got rid of the cravings. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to quit but is having a tough time.

I too am having a very hard time to quit smoking even though I know it’s the worst thing I could do. I have severe anxiety, no medication helps and cigarettes are my crutch. I do have patches and gum, everyday I tell myself to use them and I don’t. I read all the previous suggestions yet still haven’t stopped. I have severe COPD. I need help.

Truly recommend you ask your Dr for an Rx for Chantix. My husband quit with it as well. Well worth the expense. Best wishes!

Yes, I too am weak when it comes to cigarettes. I started vaping and lowering the nicotine every month until I was down to zero and then quitting was so much easier.
It doesn’t change my anxiety level but I can talk myself thru it.
Also I gained 50 lbs that I can’t get off. Being female, that one hurts.
My vanity is also a personal problem of mine.
Good luck, you can do it!!!

YES! we all do...theres oly one thing that got me to quit and here it is: the a cancer dr. told me:
YOU HAVE TO GET THEM OUT OF THE HOUSE!

I kept buying them. I put them outside in the laundry room (out of sight)
when the urge came I said ill be OK for 5 mi which lasted a lot longer. I took it minute by mnute and remembr the first night going to bed and having not had a cig. Just knowing they were there still with me was a comfort! and found this addiction is EMOTIONAL for me more than anything. I pictured how it would feel at the end of a week (or year) to look back and realizee I HAVE NOT SMOKED. I DiD NOT throw out the cigs for over a year. but I never smoked one! that was 5 yrs ago.

I quit 5 yrs ago cold turkey but emotionally it stayed with me a long time. My love for the cancer sticks is gone. It like an addiction emotionally. Like a person who keeps going back to an abuser, or food or an alcoholic BUT WORSE. I was a member of weight watchers when I quit so lucky I did not gain any weight. I still struggle wth my food adiction today. quitting smoking was the hardest thing Ive ever done. and it was only by the GRACE OF GOD that I even did it. I prayed a lot..telling god I need his help, thaat I was weak
