Continued Post-Nasal Drip and Constant Mucus in Throat

Posted by adominic @adominic, Mar 22, 2022

I was sick the last week or January/first week of February. Home Test-negative, rapid PCR-negative. All COVID symptoms and known prolonged exposure to infected individuals make me believe it was COVID. Since then, I have had a tremendously hard time dealing with post-nasal drip and mucus collecting in my throat. It is clear, sticky and almost impossible to remove from throat by coughing or clearing my throat. Flonase does nothing, allergy pills do nothing. Had anyone else had an issue like this post COVID? How long did it last? What did you do to cope? Small problem in comparison to others that post here, I realize.

I had Covid recently and had a persistent feeling like I had a hairball near the back of my throat/ very high up respiratory tract. Would not come up or break up. Cough was non-productive. Made my feel like I was gaging.
I don't like taking medicine if I don't have to, so I tried all the usual, steam, tea, lozenges, all kinds of herbs and vitamins, etc. I finally broke down and took Dexamethasone Oral rinse .5mg that was in the cabinet. I am in the Dental profession and this is an old remedy for a lot of oral things such as Lichen Plants and such. I rinsed/gargled with it for a few minutes and swallowed a tiny bit several times while gargling. Spit out the rest. I took some Ibuprofen as well figuring there was inflammation. This did the trick for me. 80% better the next morning. I did this twice/day for several days.
I am not giving medical advice so seek the advice of your doctor. And if you need it tell them it's an Oral Solution without dye, .5mg.

And indeed my PCP would not prescribe the oral rinse!

It is 5am, I have been up for an hour and have only had about 2 hours of sleep. Night after night I have had the same issue. Covid in mid-June. Beginning of August, post-nasal drip and constant need to clear the thin clear sticky mucus from throat. The doctors initially threw everything at it, meaning a antibiotic, nasal sprays, decongestant and nasal rinses. Didn’t do a thing. I cannot seem to find rhyme or reason to it being better or worse from day-to-day. Most often it is worse at night but can go on all day too. My throat tends to get dry and irritated from coughing or trying to clear the tickle/trickle in my throat. Sometimes it can feel like I am drowning and other times like a tickle. I do not feel like there is anything going on with my chest/lungs. I do get plugged up on one side or another if lay to one side. Yet, I can also feel like I can breath clearly through my nose, which is the case most of the time.
Because I have so much trouble staying asleep I am sleeping in a separate room from my husband, and both my mental and physical energy through the day is stained and low. I am getting so frustrated with this and any lack of ability to find a solution. I would like to know real solutions to only the same sensations. Thank you kindly.

Have you tried antihistamine? I take 100mg hydroxyzine 2x a day and it's helped those symptoms and a lot of the symptoms from swelling in internally

I had covid 5 months ago which resolved within 9 days BUT since then my throat constantly feels raw and I have perpetual post-nasal drip which creates a lot of phlegm in my throat and a dry cough. It comes and goes daily and I'm sick of it. I emailed my dr who said to wait before coming in to see him as it could take awhile to resolve but it has been 5 months. I'm ready to see a specialist but should I see an allergist, or ENT dr? I have tried allergy OTCs and saline nasal spray but nothing works. I actually had a few days of relieve and then boom its back!! Any advice?

I too have that post nasal drip, thick mucus in my sinuses and throat. Coughing is. It too bad. But this congestion upsets my stomach; especially in the am. Oh! I constantly have headaches.
I have been going thru Long Covid for 10 mths now. Praying this will end soon.
Be kind to yourself. You’re not alone!! I will be 🙏 for you.

I had the same thing. Nothing worked until I remembered my Thera Zinc throat spray. Knocked it right out. No more coughing and trying to clear my throat constantly.

I have tried antihistamine. Now on 2 prescriptions for chronic rhinitis to see if they will help.

Just saw doc yesterday. Go put on two things for chronic rhinitis for 30 days to see if they help. We talked about ENT. He said because it is considered such a low level issue they will likely just post-pone any appointment for somewhere up to two years away. The reason they would do this is because there are a number of people with the same issues after having Covid that they just hope that the body will heal itself. This is also because it is too new an issue they don’t know what to do about it.

Thanks for the reply but what are the two things you are referring to try?
