Constant Diarrhea

Posted by suzanne2 @suzanne2, Jun 17, 2020

Anyone here have constant diarrhea? I practically live on lomotil pills. I know my nerves play somewhat of a role but not always. Some days I live in the bathriom.
I have never had a diagnosis for my problem.

Hey there,
A good gastroenterologist is recommended. While some fermented food is good for your stomach, it is often a culprit in causing diarrhea. Start a food diary and find out what foods cause you to have the most problems. I too have chronic diarrhea and understand what you are going through. I probably clean my commode on average 5 times per day. I have to keep a large jug of vinegar in the vanity in order to keep things in my bathroom clean.
Best of luck.

I found a probiotic that has been wonderful for me. I take 2 Florastors in the morning with my breakfast and it works great. It even helped me get thru having to take antibiotics.

Hi,
Exactly which Florastor product do you use??
Thanks,

Keep a food journal … make notes of what you eat and the results. Make sure you eat more soluble fiber foods .. you can find a list by doing a internet search. A short list: oats, peas, beans, apples, citrus fruits, carrots, barley and psyllium products. You may want to add probiotic foods such as yogurt and kefir or a probiotic supplement. I use a supplement .. but had a hard time finding the correct one for me. I gave several a two week trial to make sure how I reacted to them.. most just bloated me. My husband's cousin had the same problem and suggested I try what he uses… Align. It works for me. .. I bloated some the first few days and then all settled down. If you can control it with diet all the better. Some also suggest adding prebiotics to diet or a prebiotic supplement.

Hang in there, experiment with eliminating possible irritants from your diet and advocate for yourselves. My GI has suspected I have Microscopic Colitis & biopsied for it for over 10 years, and it finally confirmed through a colonoscopy while I was in the hospital for constant diarrhea with severe pain.

Had weekly diarrhea and dr did a colonoscopy found nothing sand told me to get used to it as it was aging. My microscopic colitis from 2018 was no longer active per the colonoscopy biopsy. 6 months later diarrhea was increasing and eventually I had it everyday in July. Was waiting for opening at gastro office when friend mentioned gluten. I stopped eating white bread for one day (white bread for histamine intolerance) and my diarrhea disappeared. Went from daily to zero diarrhea. Neither pcp nor gastro dr ever mentioned gluten as the problem

I had a similar situation.
After negative stool testing and bloodwork , Gastro doctor said my diarrhea could be stress.
I tried the Fodmap diet and can now pinpoint which fruits and vegetables to avoid, in addition to being gluten free and dairy free.
If I get loose stools, I take 1 Imodium tablet ( this happes about once every 4 weeks)
Recently I started taking 1 tsp of Meramucil dissolved in water,
stools sometimes being too soft and Metamucil seems to firm them up.
I hope this helps

Try to see if. You are gluten sensitive. Stopped eating white bread for one day and my diarrhea stopped. Now at 3 weeks no diarrhea.

Sounds like an "Aha!" moment. You might find Dr. Tom O'Bryan's book, "You Can Fix Your Brain" helpful as he discusses gluten's role in brain health as well as gut health - as well as sugar and other factors. There are many other resources about gluten which might be of help to you - and to your PCP and gastroenterologist. ;->
