Constant Diarrhea

Posted by suzanne2 @suzanne2, Jun 17, 2020

Anyone here have constant diarrhea? I practically live on lomotil pills. I know my nerves play somewhat of a role but not always. Some days I live in the bathriom.
I have never had a diagnosis for my problem.

I once did. I learned I am lactose intolerant. The lactaid pills help a little however lactose free products work best for me. Good luck. A miserable condition.

You may have collagenous colitis. The symptoms you describe is what I experience. Please see a specialist to confirm.

Hello @burford and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am so sorry to hear of this long bout that you have had with diarrhea. I can only imagine how fatigued you must feel.

After seeing many specialists and having so many tests, your plan to go to Mayo Clinic for a consultation is a very good idea. Do you already have an appointment scheduled? If not here is a link that will give you information on scheduling an appointment at one of the three Mayo Clinic facilities. http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63.

As you mentioned that you've tried a lactose-free diet, I'm just wondering if you have tried a gluten-free eating plan?

I'll be thinking of you and hope that you find some answers. Will you let me know if you are able to be seen at Mayo Clinic?

@burford - Hi! I read your post and I am shocked!! I know what that diarrhea is like, but not for that length of time.
I had collagenous colitis and then other autoimmune enteritis/colitis.
Like you, I have had numerous colonoscopies, endoscopes, capsule, CTs, ultrasounds, labwork. Most at Mayo.
After years of testing after the initial treatment for collagenous colitis, I got an answer to my autoimmune GI disease. New information in the Medical community found a cause that could be treated.
Have you kept your copies of all reports as well as reports from the doctors? Do you know what illnesses they have ruled out?
Are there any positive findings in biopsies you may have had? Did they do biopsies?
Teresa asked if you have been tested for celiac disease/ gluten sensitivity. Celiac disease comes to mind at once.
Your best chance is to get an appointment at Mayo.
Prepare to get full records from all doctors you have seen- sometimes they like to see them before getting an appointment- or they will ask that records are sent there before the visit.
Good luck! Mayo is superb.

Hello have you been tested for Celiac Disease?

I have been tested at Mayo for everything but the kitchen sink! They have tagged me with Microscopic Colitis. I am just completing an 8 week burst of budesonide. Since I have quit my job it has been a successful treatment. I was on it in early Fall with no success due to the daily stress of my teaching administrator. I finally quit at the end of October and I am finishing up the budesonide and am back to being able to make it to the bathroom. I also am only doing #2, 2-3 times a day rather than 6-8x! Stress is my trigger!

I was diagnosed with Gastropanesis at Mayo MN in 2015.. I had the multitude of GI problems associated including diarrhea, gas, and related urgencies. I tried all sorts of things to make my life more normal, including probiotics, gas-X, you name it.. A biochemist friend, who worked at a hospital recommended I try Pedialyte and Kifer (the dairy probiotic that has been around more than a thousand years..) .. In moderation that addition to my sparse and frequent eating (I fight to gain weight) has really helped me through the Pandemic and all even allowing me to travel some..
