Just wondering...can people wear compression socks if they suffer from neuropathy?

@mcd123, I've been wearing compression socks for about 5 years and I have small fiber peripheral neuropathy. I also have lymphedema in my legs and it helps control the swelling. Do I like...nope, it squeezes my feet and legs and is a little uncomfortable but they do their job at controlling the swelling. And in the winter I have to wear warmer socks over the top of the compression socks because they are really thin and my feet get cold.

@med123 I'm curious. I have been diagnosed with neuropathy about 1 1/2 yr ago. I have developed serious swelling in my feet. QUESTION: Do you know if the swelling goes with the neuropathy? I do have to get special shoes for swelling of my feet. I did find a pair and they are so very nice. Roomy and Velcro to fasten.

I’ve not tried compression socks but I know if I wear tight socks or tight shoes it makes my feet cold…. So I don’t know about compression socks. Good luck to you

@kayeellen, Have you discussed the swelling in your feet with your doctor? It could be a problem with peripheral edema which is similar to what I have. It's not associated with my neuropathy as far as I know.

my husband also had swelling in his feet and ankles and this dr. changed his blood pressure medication and that worked. He also tried the compression socks but with the PN they were unbearable.

I wonder what it means when one leg's calf is two inches larger than the other. Has anyone else here experienced that?

@deanna2, Have you been checked by a cardiologist for vascular circulation problems in your legs? My right leg calf was always a little larger than the left when they were both had some swelling in them. The doctor checked for blood clots and also checked the circulation in my legs then ran a lymphoscintagram test to check them (https://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info/lympho). I was diagnosed with lymphedema (https://www.circulationfoundation.org.uk/help-advice/other-vascular-information/lymphoedema) and now wear compression socks which really helps.

I used a compression sock on the affected leg, which helped. Doing research online, I learned that swelling is a common side effect of Amlodipine, one of my blood pressure medicines. When I told my GP, she took me off that which seems to have also gradually helped. My right calf is now only a half inch larger than my normal left calf. I'm going to check out the links you mentioned. Thank you.

Hi there bcool123. I have the same problem. When my feet get cold is like "liquid" ice is covering them. I have been wearing New Balance for years as I pursued walking adventures as well as daily exercise. I just got a pair of HOKAs. They have a higher sole and thicker, stronger base. Therefore my feet are not in such close contact to the ground. and hopefully will stay warmer. I also can wear thicker socks which help to keep the tootsies warm.

Now...here is the question for you. What do you do for your hands? My are always cold and have the neuropathy tingle tangles. I noticed that you can buy special heated gloves and they were priced at $99 at Costco. What do you use on your hands? What would you use if you lived in MN in snow country? I am a transplant from CA and HI and not quite used to anything below 50 degrees.

Thanks....and may you have happiness and the causes of happiness.
Chris

My right thigh is one inch smaller in diameter than my left due to stretching of femoral nerve during right hip replacement causing atrophy and weakness in right quad muscle.
