Clinical Trials
Hello--My brother was diagnosed with liver cancer in November of 2025. He received the Y90 treatment which worked very well at eliminating the tumor in his liver. Unfortunately at the end of April it was discovered the cancer has spread to lymph nodes in his chest. He has chosen to join a clinical trial at Mayo for treatment. My concern is that it is taking so long to get started. He has had to have multiple tests which makes sense, but now it is a 2 week wait for another consult with the start of the treatment nowhere in sight. My question is, is this usual? Do trials take longer than standard of care treatment? I feel the delay is adding to the risk he already has. Any advice is welcome!

@rcahill Hi and welcome to Mayo Connect. I understand your concern about the lengthy trial process. Though I don't personally have experience with a trial, I have learned here that the process can take a considerable amount of time depending on the requirements of the trial. Not everyone is eligible. What specific trial at Mayo has he chosen to join? I want to do a little research on it to see what the trial parameters are. Thanks.
I too am on a trial medication with Sarah Cannon Research in Denver. And, yes, it seemed like a long process.
First I waited several months for a spot in a trial. Then it was another month before the preliminary testing and paperwork was done and I could actually start the medication. Wishing you the best.
