Cleaning + disinfecting nebulizer and aerobica

Posted by sara10 @sara10, Jan 20, 2022

Diagnosed with bronchiectasis several years ago. No antibiotics so far but 2x airway clearance with aerobica and nebulizer recommended. Some MAC bacteria was found.
Finding all sorts of info how to properly clean and disinfect but none agree with the other. Should both be cleaned each time and is it good enough to disinfect once a week? Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or boiling best option?
Finding the whole process very tedious especially if cleaning 2x per day was necessary.
Does anybody have experience with Evenflo silicone steam sanitizing bag for disinfecting? Or, what baby bottle cleaner and dryer can you recommend?

Hello @gsobel122 & @bnthorson - I wouldn't have done it either, but 2 years ago, before we ever talked baout the "supply chain" our local pharmacy in Texas was SLoww.. to get 7% saline for me, and in desperation I turned to the on-line.It is more than I pay for the prescription with insurance coverage, but I needed it.

Now I have a "plan" with my primary - she prescribes my saline 90 day supply for 2X a day (180 vials) even though I don't use it twice every day. That way I have some extra vials when my time to reorder comes along. I always make sure to keep a full 30 day supply on hand - as soon as I open my last 60 vial box I order the next one, so I never run out even if there is a delay in receiving. And if it gets close I jump on the Internet and order a box.

Good find. This apparently comes from France. I just placed an order and the expected delivery date is Feb 14. So if anyone is running short better order soon.

As of right now, I can still get the saline from Walgreens. I live in the midwest and I never had a problem at our local Hy-Vee. They changed distributors and can't get it now. Neither can our Oscos. Keeping my fingers crossed that Walgreens continues to stock it.

Yes, the supply chain is a crazy thing. Walgreens in MN had to ship it to Walgreens in TX for me one year because the 2 locations had different suppliers. My daughter thinks there are 2 problems - all the respiratory therapy going on due to Covid in hospitals taxes the supply, and much of the saline comes from outside the US, so it is caught in the shipping chaos.

I have been unable to get 7% saline from CVS, too.

You need to go to a specialty pharmacy. I also was unable to get 7% from CVS

Well - that depends. My Walgreens has it, but the local CVS does not. We have experienced that before - they seem to carry fewer choices than some other chains. And CVS Mail Order pharmacy has it too.

Dr. Falkenham's lab is going to test the effectiveness of baby bottle sterilizers and microwave steam sterilizerr bags for killing NTM . He says that he will share results with us even before they publish their results.

I will point out that this question, how to sterilize nebulizer parts, comes up a lot. Please consider which nebulizer you use. My new Innospire Go has instructions which specifically say not to use these techniques. I am supposed to boil for 10 minutes once a week in a pan of water, making sure the mouthpiece does not touch the bottom of the pan. I use a silicone "waffle" hot pad in the pot. I thought long and hard before spending so much money (not covered by Medicare or my insurance.) I sure wouldn't want to ruin it by not following directions!
PS I do not boil the water first, or use spring or distilled water, since the 10 minute boil will kill any bacteria.
