Chronic Sinus

Posted by @frank005, Jan 2, 2017

Back in the middle of September 2016, my ears started to feel like it was plugged up and right ear ringing, when I bent forward or even cough my head hurts and also have alot of congestion. Went to see Ear Nose Throat doctor and she recommended me to do sinus rinse twice a day, prescribe me prednisone for five days and order a blood test to what I am allergic to. Medication did not work. Went back to the same doctor this time she told me to take sudafed and flonease. Medicatiion did not work but the sinus rinse did. I couldn’t get another appointment right way so I wen to see another Ear Nose Throat doctor. This time doctor recommended me to have a cat scan so I did. It turns out I have chronic sinus. So he prescribe twice to me antibotics and another round of prednisone low dosage. It did not work. I went back to my doctor and I told him you know what I have allergy. He put me on allergy medication which y you take before you go to bed at night. Medication did nothing for me. I have another appointment to see my doctor end of this month. What really worked for me is Mucinex.which I take at night before going bed.

I want to find out if any of you out there had similar experience that I’m going through and it got resolved.

Hello @frank005, and welcome to Mayo Connect. Your story of sinus problems shows how persistent you have been in finding an answer. I applaud your efforts! I too use Mucinex regularly for congestion, cough, etc. and find it helps. I also use a nasal spray and the saline rinse. I hope that your next appointment with the doctor helps give you some resolution. Chronic sinus problems are a nuisance and are hard to deal with. Please keep us posted as to how you are doing. At Mayo Connect, we care!

@frank0005, You mentioned a blood test for allergy testing. Were any other types of allergy testing done?

@mattiemae, your post didn’t seem to go through. Would you like to try again?

I don’t know where to post this?
I’ve been to allergists, last one had too complicated method of exploration. 20 years ago, saw allergist that at the end gave me a pile of lists of EVERYTHING I COULD USE. Much easier to not have to look for ingredients in every product or food that I buy. This included brand names products.
I live in Redondo Bch. CA. I also live near Phoenix – Sun City West. If you know any allergists there?
Do you know of a Dr. that gives one a list like that. Mari

Hello @mari– I apologize for the delay in my response.
I believe that posting your Allergy question in “Just want to talk” https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/other/ would be best.

I can imagine how challenging and time consuming it is to read every label when shopping. Here is a link to the Phoenix Mayo Clinic appointment line http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63 where you can request an appointment for food allergy investigation including the food and food additive challenges department.

Do you suffer from just food allergies? or seasonal and environmental allergies as well?

I HAVE many allergies – the blue dye in detergents etc. Will I get a print out of what I AM ALLOWED TO USE after appointment?once had a stack of papers w the brands and products that i am Not allergic too.Marian Dooley

I have similar problems which affect me at night only, at least bad enough I can’t sleep. I have used the nasal rinse w/saline and a bit of Alkalol. I have also used a humidifier. Have not tried Mucinex, but that is my next step. ENT said I had a deviated septum that he could fix. I have had that all my life and my problem has only happened recently; Also, I have quit smoking I hope for the last time. This time it was a Christmas present in 2016.

Hi Bob (@bobireland)
Congratulations on your 2016 Christmas present. I guess you can call that one the present that keeps on giving 🙂

I suffer from chronic sinusitus too. Earlier infections were dealt with by using antibiotics, but now I find I can keep flareup at bay by using my neti pot. As soon as I start to sense congestion, I use the neti pot morning and night. Using it at night definitely helps me be able to sleep. Here a video about using the nasal rinse from Mayo Cllinic

Are you using a neti pot or squeeze bottle?

Sometimes the rinsing isn’t enough and I also have to use a mometasone nasal spray.

Chronic Sinus issues here too. I average three sinus infections per winter/spring. I use a Neilmed bottle rinse (easier than the netipot). I use a generic brand of musinex as needed. It is so frustrating.
