Chronic low back pain

Posted by kellie21 @kellie21, Mar 30, 2021

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has had similar problems to mine. I’m 30yrs old and have chronic low back pain since the end of 2019. The pain is constant into my lower back and radiates into my right goin area and right side abdominal sometimes. I had a MRI done of the lumbar spine in feb 2020 it shows DDD and a mild intervertebral disc protrusion at L4/5. The pain is unbearable most of the time. I can’t bend down, I can’t exercise, I can’t sit long as I’m in pain roughly 80% of the time. I use to constantly exercise a lot and now I can’t even do a squat. I’ve been to my GP numerous times he said he thinks it’s mechanical. I’ve a small uterine fibroid at the back of my uterus but he said it’s small it couldn’t be causing problems. I’ve also had Had ultrasound done of my liver, kidneys, gallbladder and internal ultrasound done also. I’ve been to physio which is not helping and chiropractor which doesn’t help either (my chiro thinks it’s due to my mild protrusion and lack of core stability) I’m scared Incase it’s something more sinister and it has been missed or that fibroid could be something else.

Kelly, I'm so sorry to hear of your terrible pain. I've had back pain for years, off and on. I had a back surgery at one point years ago. I highly recommend that you see a reputable spine specialist. In the meantime, keep us posted and know that we are all hoping for the best for you.

@lioness thank you for your response. No I never had pain radiate into the buttocks or down the leg, it’s just constant on my low back more so to the right side of my spine. Yes sometimes it would fell like a burning pain, to describe it, it would feel like bone on bone pain. My chiropractor thinks it is my disc but he said normally disc protrusions heal after 6mnths. Maybe I should try get another MRi and find a spine specialist

@sparklegram thank you for getting back to me. Can I ask why you got spine surgery if you don’t mind? Was it disc protrusion? Sometimes I feel like that is what I need as no one knows what is wrong. It can be so frustrating, I feel though my quality of life is completely gone as I can’t do anything, can’t exercise anymore etc

Good morning Kelly, I hope you had a restful night last night. I had a lumbar laminectomy over 30 years ago. Yes, I did have a protruding disc, and other problems. The surgery helped immensely. But now, at 76 years of age, I have some other back problems, but nothing as severe and debilitating as I had then. I've included a link from Mayo Clinic here about laminectomys. https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/laminectomy/about/pac-20394533 Again, I highly recommend seeing a trusted spine doctor.

Kelli21 From what you have said It maybe your nerve root with the burning pain I have the same radiating into groin Dr is sending me to P T but saying this for me I use ice15 min then heat 15 min to get relieve before any surgery maybe see a neurologist could help you just suggestions It is miserable for sure With DDD possible a nerve is affected 😕

@sparklegram thank you for this insight, I really appreciate it, I will do some more research as I don’t feel like I want to go through surgery yet. Thank you for this 🙂

@lioness yes it could possibly be nerve Entrapment, My MRI report back in 2020 didn’t say anything about nerve entrapment, maybe I should mention it again to my GP and try get a investigation going. With covid now all the appointments are being delayed, such a bad time to have other problems going onbin your body. Thank you again 🙂

Hello @kellie21 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am glad to see some members have joined your discussion and shared their thoughts/experiences with you. You mention that you are 30 and led and active lifestyle prior to your symptoms setting in, which has to be extremely difficult. From what you have shared, you have been working with the same doctor for the duration so far. I am wondering if you've considered getting a second opinion?
