Chapel/religious services at Jacksonville clinic

Posted by CarynS @caryns, Oct 19, 2021

Going in for surgery next month and will be in hospital approximately 8-10 days. I've been hunting around on the site for a while now and can't seem to find anything on this. Though Rochester seems to have a wealth of information on chapels and religious services and chaplains, I see nothing as relates to the Jacksonville clinic. Anyone know who I could ask about this? Seems odd I wouldn't at least be able to have a priest visit me in Florida.

Hi @caryns, So far I’m not finding any information about religious services at Jacksonville either. I’m hoping someone with experience at that campus will pop into the conversation. I do know at the time of my visits in Rochester there were no shortages of spiritual leaders who were always ready and willing to make visits. So I’m anticipating Jacksonville would be no different.

Have you tried calling the Jacksonville campus? General number. 904-953-2000
They may be able to answer that question or put you in contact with someone who will know. Mayo Clinic is very concerned with treating the whole patient so spiritual needs are definitely on their radar.

I’m coming into your conversations a little late regarding your upcoming pancreatic surgery, Nov 10. We have a new member @kyaeger, who will be receiving a pancreatectomy, Nov 8 in Rochester and I think it would be a comfort for both of you to “connect”.

I know you’re feeling very nervous about the surgery and the outcome. But this gives you hope and a positive eye on the future! Please know that you’re in the best possible hands with the surgeon and staff at Mayo in Jacksonville. I’ve put my life into the hands of the exemplary staff in Rochester more than once and it is a comforting feeling to pass all the worry onto them. Just focus on healing and getting your life back on track.

Will you have family staying nearby? What is your recovery time in the hospital?

Yes my husband will be staying in town nearby and my parents who currently live in Florida are trying to make arrangements to come up snd stay. My doctor said the usual stay is 8-10 days but he didn't anticipate me staying longer than a week.

I did have a second question but haven't found info directly related: what are the restrictions on ICU visits in the age of Covid-19? I expect to be in ICU around 24 hours.

Hm I’m not sure either what the protocol for ICU is regarding visitors. That’s another question you could ask when placing the call to inquire about religious services. The ICU might have tighter restrictions as does the emergency department.

This is what’s available for patient guidelines for hospital visits. There are limitations of 2 people who need to be consistent during the stay.

With Covid going on I do not know if they are allowing chaplains in the Jacksonville Mayo Hospital. I would call their main number to get information about it. You may be able to arrange for a chaplain to visit with you.

It has been a while since my hospital stays. 2013 a short stay of 4 days. 2014 .. a bit over 2 weeks … and 2015 .. 3 weeks. I did not ask for a chaplain, but they popped in on their on a few times and all were very kind.

They do have a chapel and I do not know if they have services there.. I was too sick to go if they did have them. I did pop in and look at the chapel during one of my appointment visits and it is a nice chapel.. comforting just stepping in.

I had many nurses… some from my first short stay in 2013 that somehow remembered me … that came in to see how I was doing after my 2nd & 3rd surgeries and they would pray for and with me. The nursing staff took great care of me. My husband spent a good bit of time with me during the day and every night. The nurses and aides saw that he had what he needed too. With this I knew all would be well. It was. I still have difficulties, but I am much better .. I am alive and find joy in my life.

Dr Bowers did my last two surgeries and he and his team took great care of me.

I am sure you will receive this great care too.

I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Caryn. Just popping in this morning to see if you were able to contact Spiritual Care in Jacksonville with the information from @lmindela? Are there any chaplains able to come to your room? I seem to remember religious services broadcast on the in room televisions but I was ‘out of it’ most of the time so I don’t recall precisely.
Will you be bringing an iPad or notebook where you have internet access? You might be able to contact your own priest or minister with a Face-time chat.
(Also, just a FYI, if you’re bringing a phone or iPad, toss in small extension cord! 😉 from experience!)

Hi @loribmt

Update: just called the chaplaincy at Mayo Jacksonville - they do have services in their chapel. I was able to determine that they have Catholic Mass on Wednesday and Sunday at noon. There are also non-denominational services, I regret I didn't ask times for those. There are also chaplains that can visit in your room, just ask your nurse. There is a regular Catholic priest of the diocese and one on call on the days he isn't there.

Also services are televised so if you are unable to go to the chapel you can watch.

The woman on the phone was very helpful so feel free to contact her if there are any questions.

Thanks to everyone who gave me info on this!
