Can't get an appointment: Any tips on what to do?

Posted by radiocity @radiocity, Jul 2, 2021

Over a year trying to get an appointment, Scottsdale/Phoenix. I have two issues that may or may not be related. 5 'regular' doctors and 2 years later reveals what are likely lumbar spinal issues, but none of them can account for an issue in my left abdominal area. Last Doc I saw sent referral to Mayo, April 2020. Mayo says 2-3 years to establish primary care. I asked for an appt (internal medicine, interns, anyone at this point) for a comprehensive physical, to basically start over, but I keep getting rejected. I don't understand.

I was told from Mayo employee via phone, that I couldn’t request an appointment for one year, from the date I was denied.
Has this changed or was I given wrong information?

That is correct information for applying to the same department by self-referral. It may be worth exploring a physician referral if your doctor thinks you should go to Mayo Clinic.

I have been rejected by Mayo Clinic for my serious sinus and throat clearing problems. They apparently don't care and will not allow me an appointment. I would like to spend 10 minutes of my throat clearing with them and then see what they think. They apparently don't think it is serious enough. So feeling like I am chocking on mucus every day and night is not serious? I have done everything possible to help with my problem and have had no success. That is why I contacted Mayo clinic (Phoenix) but was denied and appointment. It is my opinion that they are way TOO OVERATED and snobs! I am not finished with Mayo Clinic yet!!!

@fab44, not getting an appointment feels like a gut punch. You investing hope in making that appointment request - hope that you'd finally get answers and promise of hope and healing the Mayo Clinic is known.

Please know that you were not denied an appointment because your health issues are not serious enough. Your health issues limit your quality of life. It's scary to choke on mucus every day.

You're probably not going to like what I'm going to write next. Mayo Clinic simply has more requests for appointments than available openings in some departments. Availability depends on the nature and urgency of the problem and Mayo Clinic's ability to help (as determined by a Mayo Clinic doctor). The complexity of the medical condition, or for less complex conditions, the availability of care closer to home are important factors to consider.

It is frustrating when do not get care your seeking.

Did you self refer or did your current ENT refer you. If rejection was from self refer, then maybe ask current doctor to refer you. No guarantee it will get you an appt, but worth a try.

If I was denied appointment in pulmonary department with my doctors referral, can my doctor request a different department appointment for me?

Why did Mayo refuse to see more for Brachial Plexus Injury?I suffered a injury resulting in nerve injury resulting in chest muscle paralysis and impengement / ischemia of my brachial plexus. Mayo Clinic is the only facility in my state that has a brachial plexus surgeon. They refused to see me multiple times. Leaving me to lay on my back for 544days praying for death to come to me and also causing my permanent nerve injury. Why did they refuse me? I feel like they must seriously be sociopaths to do that to someone. They have refused to respond to my inquiries.

@nursecurt, I'm so sorry that you are in such pain. It is such a gut punch to be denied an appointment. It sounds like you have taken the right steps to get an appointment at Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic has more requests for appointments than available openings. You may wish to ask your treating doctor to submit a referral on your behalf. Another possibility for you may be to request an appointment with an institution that is part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

The Mayo Clinic Care Network is a select group of independent health systems that are granted special access to Mayo Clinic's extensive knowledge and world-leading medical expertise. The Mayo Clinic Care Network helps keep care local by providing guidance and answers to many questions that might otherwise require a referral to a specialist. See the member hospitals here:

@sacole Each Mayo has a Patient Advocacy Office and personnel to assist you. They don't make decisions but will investigate with the section to get answer for you and hopefully a good outcome that you want. There may be a good reason or could be just Mayo Policy that does not allow. But allow the patient advocacy department to help you get the answer and address the reason the non referral was done.

They will investigate and get back to you.

Due to the overwhelming requests for appointments, I was rejected even with a referral from my primary provider. But don't lose hope. There are great NET clinics out there. I know the University of Iowa is a leading NET center. Many others as well. Best Wishes to you as you select a provider!
