Can Prolia be safely and reasonably discontinued?

My wife is 85 years old, taking Prolia, and has recently moved to an assisted living facility. It is very difficult for her to travel from the ALF, and she does not wish to do so for any reason. Is there a point at which it is reasonable to discontinue Prolia infusions? (Note: The ALF will not do infusions on site.)

I want to stop Prolia. I have had terrible joint, muscle and bone pain. But my doctors are telling me to replace it with reclast and the ride effects appear to be just as bad if not worse since the kidneys are stressed and your vision is involved. I do not want to take any of the drugs but I am terrified of getting the spinal fractures after I stop Prolia. I am do for my third injection March 21. I don't know what to do.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I firmly decided that my body did not want Prolia - the side effects for me were not good - very similar to your plus hair loss. So, why are you putting a drug into your body that it does not want and cannot handle. Do you know why Prolia has to be given in a special setting? It is dangerous to handle - check it out for yourself. Good luck.

I just never went for the fourth shot. I have to take my chances and probably with having polio at 10 months and being unstable and taking medrol for R/A, I am at risk but I accepted it and try to be as careful. Of course bones can break without falling I understand that. It is a dilemma and I wish I knew a good answer.

You are very brave. My gut is telling me to just stop taking any of these drugs but I am terrified of spinal fractures. I really do feel trapped.
I pray that you will be well and no broken bones !!!!!

I wish the same for all of us who have turned our backs on prolia. Thank you for your well wishes. I often wonder in years from now if it will be discovered something is inappropriate about it. Mary Ellen

Hi, I firmly decided that my body did not want Prolia - the side effects for me were not good - very similar to your plus hair loss. Dear sewcouture, Yes ! My body is telling me that Prolia is a poison for me but every doctor I have is telling me that if I stop it without replacing it with Reclast that I will get spinal fractures etc. And the side effects of Reclast appear to be as bad as Prolia. I am panicked about what to do. My third injection of Prolia is due March 21st. I hope all goes well with you. I have been taking vitamin D3 and Calcium for years. Bless you

I am reading so many negative comments about Prolia that I am getting concerned when I don’t know if there is a reason to. I have had injections for 5 years now without incident and improved my scores to osteopenia. Also, I have not broken any more bones! I feel as if I should be looking for another alternative as it feels that the future will hold negative health outcomes. I know this is my anxiety talking and I need to understand each of our situations are unique.

I just started prolia one shot about 6 months ago and don’t know about the things you are saying. I’m getting ready for my next shot and am wondering if I should continue.

Hi, No. I take ergocalciferol and Vitamin D. I am not going on any osteoporosis drugs again. Before Prolia I was on one (can't remember the name) and Boniva. They both made me sick . So now, I feel great and I am staying far away from any of the osteoporosis drugs.

Hi, It is Vitamin D2. Calcium will not work well without Vitamin D. It is by prescription and I take one 50,000IU cap per week. I have had no side effects. K

There are two kinds of Vitamin D, D2 or Ergocalciferol and D3, or Cholecalciferol . D2 is a synthetic product that is derived from plant precursors. D3 is a natural product that’s produced in all animals upon exposure to sunlight, and can also be made using sheep lanolin. The 50,000 IU cap prescribed by doctors is D2 but most supplements are D3.
