Can Gabapentin make neuropathy pain worse?

Posted by cwallen9 @cwallen9, Apr 16, 2019

I started getting peripheral neuropathy pain about nine months ago in my feet and hands right after I received a cervical steroid injection. I started taking gabapentin about 7 months ago. I have gradually increased my dose from 100 mg a day to 1500 mg. I can't say that it has decreased my pain at all. In fact, my pain has gotten steadily worse. I was just wondering if it is possible that gabapentin can sometimes make neuropathy pain worse. My EMG and biopsy results are negative for short fiber neuropathy so far.

I have taken Gabapentin for years. 600 mg before I go to bed. I have terrible leg aches and pain at night, and Gabapentin has worked with me with no side affects whatsoever. But as long as you have tried it and it doesn’t help, you really need to confirm with your doctor.

I was just put on 100 grams of gabapentin
every eight hours. I had terrible ache and pains in my legs after my second pill which was at 1 am and kept me from sleeping.
.This I worry about. I am very sensitive
to mediation. I am 85 years old and have had pain, numbness, swelling in my feet for years.I am on and have been on Tylenol 3 with codeine for years.
Should I keep taking the 100 gram in hopes that my body can het use to the med?

Sir, I have been taking the recommend max dose of Gabapentin for several years now. That max dose is 3600 milligrams. If you are taking 100 GRAMS I believe that means you are taking 100,000 milligrams daily. I am not a doctor but you can look this info up if you have a smartphone or computer. It sounds to me like you are taking 30 times too much. Perhaps this is why you are have these problems. John Maccorkindale

Hi. I've been on 900 mg of Gabba 4 times daily for several years now. This is the max recommended dose. My foot pain is about 60-70% better. I am now beginning to slowly reduce my dosing a little each 2 weeks. I also use 4% lidocaine on my feet sometimes which is great. It's over the counter by the way. John Maccorkindale

Anybody taking drug that works on Neuropathy and foot pain? I’ve taken Ap-Codein for my arthritis for years. Helps a bit. But this Neuropathy is dreadful! Disc no help!

I am being weaned off Gapapebtin to go in Pregabalin. I have been on this before and it did work to some extent but there are side effects. Weight gain and edema both undesirable. I will make sure my weight stays reasonable as it is now The pain and discomfort is awful and it ruins your life. I defy anybody being philosophical about it. It's damned impossible to be like that.

That sounds more like it. It's also a very small amount, does it help? Could your doc prescribe a higher dose?
