Can Gabapentin make neuropathy pain worse?
I started getting peripheral neuropathy pain about nine months ago in my feet and hands right after I received a cervical steroid injection. I started taking gabapentin about 7 months ago. I have gradually increased my dose from 100 mg a day to 1500 mg. I can't say that it has decreased my pain at all. In fact, my pain has gotten steadily worse. I was just wondering if it is possible that gabapentin can sometimes make neuropathy pain worse. My EMG and biopsy results are negative for short fiber neuropathy so far.

Over the years, I've found Pain Management specialists/clinics having very little interest in searching for help for those with PN. In their mind, PN is a malady 'you live with.' The first utterance from a specialist I visited recently was, "What do you want me to do for you?" There's no chance a physician with that attitude will be creative and do the work necessary to identify little-known drugs that could help the patient.

4 ReactionsI was just put on 100 grams of gabapentin
every eight hours. I had terrible ache and pains in my legs after my second pill which was at 1 am and kept me from sleeping.
.This I worry about. I am very sensitive
to mediation. I am 85 years old and have had pain, numbness, swelling in my feet for years.I am on and have been on Tylenol 3 with codeine for years.
Should I keep taking the 100 gram in hopes that my body can het use to the med?

2 Reactions@jeanallen, I'm sorry to hear that the gabapentin is not helping and may be causing you more pain and worsening other symptoms. Members are patients like yourself and cannot give you medical advice. Hopefully a member can share similar experiences that may help.
Have you discussed the symptoms and your question with your doctor?

4 ReactionsI have taken Gabapentin for years. 600 mg before I go to bed. I have terrible leg aches and pain at night, and Gabapentin has worked with me with no side affects whatsoever. But as long as you have tried it and it doesn’t help, you really need to confirm with your doctor.

5 ReactionsSir, I have been taking the recommend max dose of Gabapentin for several years now. That max dose is 3600 milligrams. If you are taking 100 GRAMS I believe that means you are taking 100,000 milligrams daily. I am not a doctor but you can look this info up if you have a smartphone or computer. It sounds to me like you are taking 30 times too much. Perhaps this is why you are have these problems. John Maccorkindale
Hi. I've been on 900 mg of Gabba 4 times daily for several years now. This is the max recommended dose. My foot pain is about 60-70% better. I am now beginning to slowly reduce my dosing a little each 2 weeks. I also use 4% lidocaine on my feet sometimes which is great. It's over the counter by the way. John Maccorkindale
More than likely meant 100 mg.
