Bursitis in left hip replacement

Posted by 50surgeries @50surgeries, Oct 25, 2018

When I went to my follow-up with my surgeon at the Mayo Clinic in August. To see what was causing me to have pain in my left hip. He discovered that the reason why I was having the severe hip pain in my left hip replacement was due to bursitis. His resident injected me with a steroid right into the spot where it was hurting. But, now two months later. The bursitis is back. Which is strange. Thinking about going to one of the local orthopedic doctors at the clinic I go to here at home where I live to see if another steroid injection will help. The pain is leaving me fully dependent on my power wheelchair again because it hurts to walk.

My hip replacement actually relieved the bursitis. However, like you, I became aware that sitting back on my hip while rotating it during my recumbent bike rides was very aggravating to it. I am facing my second hip replacement and am going to ask if the bursa can be removed during this surgery. Should have asked the first time. Can be as debilitating as osteoarthritis and no cartilage.

Hello all , I am glad I found you. I have been having bursitis pain in my left hip after my THR in 2021. It has gotten worse over the last few years stabbing pain when I sit to long stand and walk to long . I went to Mayo for this issue in July of 2024 fanatasic doctor, he recommended to have the illiopsoas tendon released “ or lengthened in other words. That it was extremely effected by the surgery and it may help with the pain , I went back in December of 2024 and had it done since than it seems a little better but I also suffer from osteoarthritis and bursitis so right now I’m going through physical therapy. I had several Cortizone injections as well. Over the last few years. It’s very slow going. I hope it gets better. We will see. Thank you all for listening.

I haven't had a hip replacement but I do suffer from trochanteric bursitis periodically - I find that icing the are several times a day for 15 minutes is very helpful as well as cutting back on my walking until it isn't painful

I had THR on my right hip seven years ago and developed bursitis in that hip. I am also full of osteoarthritis have even had my toes operated on because of bone on bone. I do have cortisone injections in my bursa about every six months and so far it has helped. I walk for exercise and after about a mile and a half it really starts hurting without the injection. I read that a percentage of people do get bursitis after surgery. By the way I'm an 84 year old female

This question is for anyone ,do any of you have an issue sitting for several minutes than standing up getting a sharp jab in the hip groin area? Or perhaps driving for a while and have an issue getting out of the vehicle?
Thank

I feel your pain!
I had hip replacement surgery in June. No option bone on bone in left hip. I never had any history of Bursitis. But like you developed it as a result of the surgery. It’s extremely painful even after steroids, injection & pain meds.
I think surgeons need to inform patients of this possibility from the surgery!

Would you be willing to share the name of your physician?
I developed bursitis after my hip
Replacement.
I asked my Dr if the bursitis showing on the XRay was related to the surgery
He said no???
Then I researched it and found that not true.
Since I never had bursitis prior to surgery.

@sblinow32 hello I originally had a torn Labrum from a car accident back in 2018 that is how it all started . By the time I had my surgery approved by DOL (it was a work accident, I was hit by a guy on drugs ) anyway it was to late my hip was shot , after the labrum repair I had to have the hip replaced in 2021, with the groin pain getting worse even after that is when it was determined I have bursitis and tendinitis in my illiopsoas from a MRI. I had to have the illiopsoas “ Released” hoping it would help , I had that done by Doctor Mario Hevesi at Mayo in MN 12/2024 it did help a little but it’s still there . I know how to manage it now by not sitting to long I can’t really walk a long time I take meds and try and work out as much as I can because now I have atrophy in my left hip due to all the surgeries that was seen in my most recent MRI . PT and exercise is what I continue to do . That was a lot I know but it’s my story and good luck to you all keep me posted .
Thanks Frank Cat
