Burning/irritation in throat/ chest after nebulizing and huffing

Posted by sallyb827 @sallyb827, May 28, 2023

For the past several day after I have nebulized with 7% solution, used the Aerobika and huff coughed, my throat and chest feel irritated with a slight burning feeling. My head aches also.
I feel fine when I get up. This morning I used half 3% and half 7% for nebbing. It is like my throat and lungs are totally dry. Nothing is coming up after the Aerobika and huff cough and still the slight burning and irritation.
Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do?
Thanks,
Sally

Where are you getting 3%? I can't seem to find it from any of our pharmacies.

I live in Florida and can get it through my grocery store pharmacy. Did you try Amazon?

When I have irritation of my throat from nebbing or whatever I take 1/3 - 1/2 teaspoons of Manuka honey. It is a little pricey but does a good job. I've decided I'm worth it. Also try using half 3% and half 7% to give yourself a break. My pulmonary doc does not believe 7% is better than 3% and won't give me an Rx for it. I'm going to order 7% from some supplier without Rx as it does seem to do well for out condition as indicated from our MAC folks. Good luck.

You can get it from Amazon Pharmacy. It is VERY difficult to find everywhere.
If you are an NJH patient you can get it from their pharmacy as well. I find Amazon easier.

For me anyway, Amazon just upped their price from $10 plus dollars to 30 plus dollars for same amount of 3%.

Hi. Is it the 3% or the 7% that seems to be harder to get and/or more expensive these days? I have just been diagnosed recently (also have asthma) so am trying to start with the 3% and it burns my throat! So I haven't gotten far, yer.
Also, is it pretty standard recommendation to nebulize on an empty stomach?
Thank you

I don't nebulize on an empty stomach but I don't know if that is wrong. I could never do it without coffee first LOL. I don't know about 7% but the 3% is a war to find cheaply since no one seems to be able to bill Medicare part b for it. There is a good RX coupon that makes it much cheaper IF the pharmacy you use can find it. AT the moment Good RX has a coupon for Walgreens at about $12.

Hi Sally. I too am very dry in the am and don't try to nebulize until later in the day after I'm better hydrated. I also prefer not to do treatments directly after eating because the airway clearance breathing, coughing (and smart vest if you use that) can cause gastric reflux. 7% saline can take a little time to get used to, but I found it does bring up more mucus. Diluting it with your 3% for a bit is a good idea. Breathing in some room air during treatment and taking more time can also help with the transition.

Hi Karen,
Thank you for your response. I seem to have more mucous in the morning. Sometimes it hurts my throat and chest after I huff cough for a while during a treatment. Sometimes I have more mucous in the afternoon. There seems to be no rhyme or reason, why the mucous level differs. I hydrate all the time so that should not be an issue.
I usually go exercise after a morning treatment so, if I have plans for the day, I need to start early.
Maybe I I need to rethink my schedule like get up eat, go exercise, and then do my treatment.
