Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS): Anyone found any relief?

Posted by ristu @ristu, Feb 22, 2019

I have BMS 3 years now. Has anyone had pain, and inflammation relief from GABA capsules, or liquid ? Vitiman B12 ?

I am writing this in hopes that all those that have BMS will find some benefit and hopefully long term relief
A few years ago I woke up with my mouth on fire, tongue swollen and a few small white sores on my gums and tongue. I thought maybe I was having a reaction to insulin, as I had spent the previous day in the ER with an IV of Insulin. I then went to he clinic and they prescribed a mouth rinse and I tried that for a few days and that didn't seem to help much. Next I decided I would try Hydrogen Peroxide and let me tell you, there is nothing I can think of that hurts more than that, if my mouth was not literally on fire before, it was now! I stood it as long as I could and after, I did feel some relief so I did it a couple more times throughout the day. Went to the pharmacy for more and there, discovered an OTC product by Orajel 2X mouth sore rinse! After a day or two, everything was back to normal! Once in a while (2-3 times a year) it will flare up again and I use the Orajel which takes it away! I hope this info. helps, take care and good luck!!! @btsum68

Hi @calendargirl7, you are not alone. There are several members talking about burning mouth syndrome and how to find relief. For that reason, I moved your message to this existing discussion:

Keeping my mouth really clean helps a lot. Most of the time I’ve used Biotene toothpaste but it never seems to clean very well. Lately I’ve been using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and is is working better,

Hi. In the past year I’ve learned my burning mouth syndrome was a misdiagnosis. I have Sjogrens. Rheumatologist said autoimmune diseases run in packs. If you have one, you have another. Unfortunately treatment is expensive drugs that don’t work very well as you have experienced. I have progressed with this disease. I no longer produce tears. Eyes burn. Parotid and salivary glands palpable and visible. Sex is painful. I just wanted to throw this out there to consider. Best wishes.

For me I use that OTC Ora Jel 2 and that works well for me! Initially it took probably about a week using it 4-5 times a day after that when I could feel it coming on, I would use it a couple of times in a day then not again until I needed it! I will warn you, the first time it will make you dance a jig but if you can handle the pain for a couple of minutes, I'll be worth it! Good luck, please let me know if it helps you! @btsum68

The only OTC that helps my burning tongue is diphenhydramine/Benadryl. Just as it helps allergy suffers with burning and stinging of the nasal passages and eyes, it eases my burning/stinging tongue. It is the only OTC that helps me. It is better than any topical remedy. My burning originates deep within my tongue, making topical treatments worthless in easing my BMS symptoms. Maybe it will help you too. I tried the less sedating antihistamines, but they offered my tongue no relief. I choose feeling sleepy over my tongue burning, it is worth it for me. I do not drive, etc., when I use diphenhydramine. I was referred to a top Neurology clinic in Seattle, WA. I want to find out about oral nerve blocks as a treatment. Has anyone tried nerve blocks? When my tongue/mouth is at its worst, along with my mouth and tongue burning, my face and scalp will burn and sweat. I am so desperate, I will try anything, if it promises a chance of relief. I am so depressed. I feel so hopeless.

I have been experiencing Burning Mouth (Burning Tongue) Syndrome for 12 years. It started when I was dealing with the trauma of my mother's stroke and having to make life ending decisions for her. It has never gone away. From my understanding, trauma can be an onset incident for BMS. Stress definitely flares up the BMS, but I deal with it everyday. As I've researched BMS, I learned most people with BMS are post-menopausal women. That's me. I've not noticed certain foods affecting my condition. I have learned that there is no good explanation for the cause or a cure. For most women, it simply goes away eventually which is generally up to a year or so. I've had it for 12 years! It is so frustrating.

To begin, I tried antacids for acid reflux...nope. I tried a mouth guard for night in case I was biting my tongue...nope. I had blood work to check for diabetes...nope. I take B12 everyday...nope. My dentist had a compounded mouthwash made for me...just numbed my mouth. Tried dry mouth mouthwash...nope. I even had an MRI of my brain to rule out MS...nope (thank God!).

I take 1 MG clonazePam as needed up to 3 times a day. Most days I take the maximum dose of 3 tablets throughout the day. It takes the edge off, but does not make it go away. I also take Gabapentin for Restless Leg Syndrome at night. I don't think it helps the BMS, but it helps me sleep and I don't notice BMS when sleeping. Chewing minty gum helps and ice chips help too. But I just want it to go away. I am tired of taking so many meds. If anyone can help be a sounding board for me or have any tips, I'd love that. I scared that I'll be dealing BMS the rest of my life.
