Bubbles in Urine
I (16M) have bubbles in my pee but my tests were normal and I’m otherwise healthy. Protein was negative, no elevated creatinine and 118 eGFR. Normal blood tests and pressure. No pain, burning, or frequency.

Welcome to Mayo Connect, though not male (or 16) I understand your concern. Sounds like you have already had it checked out with your provider. I am not medical professional and you probably have googled it, but this article from Cleveland Clinic provides information and other reasons: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/symptoms/foamy-urine
Who ever wrote it, had a sense of humor, I like the quote: " it’s time to have a tinkle talk with a healthcare provider"
Did your provider offer any explanation?
Hi @keith4980, Sam. Foamy urine is common, and the causes can be harmless. Having said that, I'm glad you had things checked out with your doctor. Are you still concerned that something might be wrong? What did your doctor say about it?
@colleenyoung What’s most likely the cause of the bubbles in my pee?
I’m 16 and male.
@keith4980, that is something to discuss with your doctor who knows your medical history and who did the testing.
From Mayo Clinic
- What does it mean when urine looks foamy? Should I be concerned if it doesn't go away after a few days? https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/expert-answers/foamy-urine/faq-20057871
Are you following up with your doctor who ordered the tests?
@keith4980
If you are not diabetic, nor do you have kidney disease, and all the tests have returned negative:
In your case, IMHO, the likely reason there are "bubbles" or "foaming" forming in the toilet bowl, are simply the physics of a strong 16 yo urine stream hitting the surface of the toilet water at high force and creating bubbles/foam.
Be assured, as you age, your urine stream will decrease in force, and there will be less bubbles; unless some pathological process is happening.
I have sons, 2 of them, grown now. The only reason one of my 16 yo sons would have come to me with this question would be that perhaps they'd had unprotected sex and are worrying they may have caught some disease.
Am not meaning to offend, but if you are of like mind of many 16-21yo males: time to go see the pecker checker to allay your fears.
Any burning and stinging when urinating?
@slarson14 No burning or stinging. Normal color. I do pee standing up.
Well that is good.
What usually causes foaming in urine is increased protein in the urine, which is seen in kidney disease. Protein acts like soap in water or urine and causes bubbles.
But if your labs are good - both urine and blood work - don't worry about it?
How long has it been appearing bubbly to you?
Another thing I remembered is that ejaculation semen has both sugar and protein in it. There is also a phenomenon called retrograde ejaculation, where when you ejaculate, the semen goes backwards, into your bladder instead of out the penis opening.
If there were semen in your urine due to retrograde ejaculation or perhaps in your urethra just prior to peeing, that could possibly cause foaming.
@slarson14 I think it’s just the force of my peeing maybe. It’s been bubbly for about a month now.
I was experiencing bubbling in my urine. I went to see a kidney doctor and was told that bubbles in the urine indicate high levels of protein. Inform your primary care physician. They should refer you to a kidney doctor.
