Bronchiectasis

Posted by maryrn7 @maryrn7, 4 days ago

Three months ago I was diagnosed with pneumonia and bronchiectasis. I had several spots of pneumonia and wound up hospitalized. I am 78 and usually a very healthy 78. I have been sick with a nasty cough for about two years and have been put on antibiotics a couple of times and steroids. Nothing really helped. Nebulizing with three different kinds of medication after discharge. Nebulizing is not fun and time consuming. I started weaning off that through my own advice. And started drinking two or 3 cups of Mullein Tea. I have been using the Mullen tea for almost 3 weeks and I found that almost immediately the mucus was thinning out and I was able to get it up. I still cough, some days worse than others. But I do think that the Mullen tea is really helping me. My pulmonologist mentioned it to me, which is why I am taking it. I take the Stialto inhaler daily and use my albuterol inhaler as I feel I need it. Hope this information helps someone out there.

@sueinmn Wish we had an HEB in OKC....love both Central Market and HEB in Plano... Wow...you just taught me about HEB Plus....Looked it up to understand why you placed Plus with it..a larger HEB! I think the HEB, then, on Preston Road in Plano must be a Plus and I didn't understand that. It is huge. I take it you are referring to the HEB Plus in south Texas and not in your summer residence up in the northern part of the US.?

@blm1007blm1007 Yes, HEB Plus is in Texas. We have an equally terrific smaller employee-owned chain in MN called HyVee - our nearest store is 1 mile from home, the larger one about 6 miles. Of course, prices are a lot higher in MN as so much produce, etc is brought from a distance. And of course, wages there are higher.

Please read about preparing bulk mullien leaves for tea. It has tiny hairs that may irritate your throat and needs very careful double straining.

Thanks

@kamarla how exactly do you double strain? What do you use ?

@kamarla Very good point. To avoid irritating hairs I use a drawstring tea bag inside a Tea Infuser for Loose Leaf Tea. Works well. I also take mucinex, Brinsupri along with very strong mullein tea. Seems to keep things in check but hard to know what's doing what. In any event, placebo proven to be effective!

PS - I purchased Frontier Co-op Mullein Leaf, Cut and Sifted - Dried Mullein Leaves from Amazon

@scoop I’m attaching a link. Do you just disposable bags like these, with the infuser ? $10 Seems pretty cheap for $400.

Interesting, Where can you get mullein tea. How many times a day do you drink it?

@alicebrew1 "A little bronchiectasis" could explain the coughing and mucus. Have they tested your sputum for other infections?
Also, if the pulmonologist is experienced in treating Bronchiectasis, they probably recommended airway clearance to keep the mucus moving out. If not, you can ask about it or take a look at this video:

@sueinmn yes tested multiple times for Mac . Fungi . Haemophilus is what comes up . Due for more sputum testing . Hard to get the right stuff up for testing . Yes he mentioned the lung clearing . It’s complicated cause I’m dealing with many doctors allergist, pulmonologist infectious disease doctor. The allergist put me on the trilogy for “asthma the pulmonologist said I probably didn’t need that. I just had also environmental damage due to performing micro dermabrasion treatments, and also being involved in the aftermath of a hurrican I also had pneumonia when I was 54. there’s just many pieces to the puzzle .
