My Mom has Bronchiectasis and she coughs up lots of sputum on a daily basis. So much so that she has to carry a spit bag around when she leaves home. Has anyone heard of anymore medicine being created to help with the excessive sputum?
@brody89
A bronchiectasis exacerbation is defined by guidelines as a deterioration in three or more key symptoms (cough, sputum volume/consistency, sputum purulence, breathlessness, fatigue, or hemoptysis) lasting at least 48 hours, requiring a change in treatment. Treatment usually involves 14–21 days of antibiotics.

4 Reactions@charisscurry Does she do daily airway clearance with 7% saline in a nebulizer and a palpating vest? For me that reduces the amount of sputum I produce. Both can and should be prescribed by her doctor.

@brody89 The cost is determined by the speciality pharmacy. In my case it started with medicare and was denied. I was finally approved at 5 weeks after original prescription and got a call from the pharmacy with information on cost etc. I was shocked (pleasantly) that I only had to pay a co-pay and that was all for this year. I just received my first bottle on April 1. Good luck on your journey. BTW my pharmacy did have payment plans.
@cwal Thanks for your reply.I agree with the summary attached.
However treatment with Antibiotics does two things can assist in preventing more severity of an infection and also in the healing by eleminating harmfull germs.
An infection means active germs causing illness.
But many Lung conditions are actually driven by structural damage and inflammation,not infection itself.
Also being on Antibiotics is also not good and there are also side effects as well.
Iam have been on Anitibiotics long term and doesnt make any difference.
This is where Brinsupri comes in to play targeting a specific Gene that has to do with the inflammation in the airways.
It is not always about infections.
But getting an infection can make symtoms alot worse.

4 Reactions@brody89. My cost was the deductible of 2xxx.00 don't remember the exact cost.but it was.not the seven thousand I was expecting and they have payment plans. I have added anxiety to my breathing difficulties so you may consider talking to your doctor either PCP or pulmonologist. I also find reading to.be a distraction and calming. I hope this helps you.
@brody89
Correct regarding antibiotics. I was only giving clarification to the definition of an exacerbation according to guidelines for informational purposes because you made the comment that you have exacerbations almost every day.

1 ReactionBrinsupri does not treat an active infection. If you have one that is causing a true exacerbation, it still requires treatment and you need antibiotics.
