Breathing problems: What could be the cause?

Posted by eagle71 @eagle71, Jan 17, 2022

Shortness of breath for 6 months. 4 pulmonologists, one says pulmonary fibrosis, no Covid issue, 2 Pft show restrictions, chest X-rays clear, latest sniff test shows right diaphragm paralyzed. No diagnosis yet.

Hi there. Just came across your post. You mentioned pulmonary fibrosis. Is that a definite diagnosis or just a possibility? I have pulmonary fibrosis and was just at curious. Also what is the sniff test? I hope you are doing OK today. Kathleen

Sniff test is a real time fluoroscopy while watching expansion and contraction of the diaphragms

@eagle71 If the SNIFF test shows you have a paralyzed diaphragm, that is more than likely causing or contributing to your shortness of breath issues. A paralyzed diaphragm is a rare disorder which most doctors, even pulmonologists, don't know much about. One of your doctors knew enough about it to suspect you might have a paralyzed diaphragm and ordered the SNIFF test, which is the gold standard test that determines if you have a paralyzed diaphragm. If your doctors aren't addressing the issue of your paralyzed diaphragm and what you can do about it, I hope you will find a doctor who can. Often thoracic surgeons know the most about the condition; but surgeons do surgery and often aren't open to other approaches, such as waiting to see if the phrenic nerve will heal itself. I hope you will read through the discussions about paralyzed diaphragms on Mayo Connect to learn more about it. I don't know anything about the other lung issues you are facing but hope you find some relief and answers. ,Good luck!
