Booster - have you had one and what were side effects

Posted by Laurie, Volunteer Mentor @roch, Sep 17, 2021

Lot of news about boosters, if and when should get. I do not want to get into politics, just wondering for those who have had, what are your side effects?

I received my Moderna booster at Mayo Rochester on Wed. 9/15 (6 months after my 2nd COVID vaccine). Mayo reached out to me via portal and advised me to make an appointment for booster. I assume this is based on medical information in my Mayo medical record, I have many medical conditions, but cancer in remission is most serious.

There are pros and cons of getting, but I decided the pros out weighed the cons in my situation.

I am on day 2, and experiencing sore arm, headache and tired. I had a headache and sore arm after 2nd shot, this time slightly worse. Hopefully will go away in few days. Glad I have nothing important to do today, taking Tylenol and hope headache goes away before weekend.

I am first person I know to get booster. My sister has also been notified to get her booster, and is waiting to see how I react to mine. Also, many of my friends are interested in how I react to booster.

I am interested in side effects people are having and how long they lasted, were they about same as 2nd shot or worse.

Thanks
Laurie

Good idea. The Q&A video with infectious diseases specialist, Dr. Poland, that I posted earlier in the discussion thread might help you to gather questions or answer some.

My husband got the Johnson & Johnson. He experienced fatigue, aches, roller coaster - good and then bad, headache. Took about 3-4 days to get back to normal.

I had the Pfizer booster Friday the powder form which I had never heard of. The first two shots I had no side effects. The booster I had the normal sore arm but I just didn’t feel right after it not sick just not right. I had a slight throbbing headache which I took Tylenol for and I was extremely tired for a couple of days. I was in bed by 9pm and laid around all day the following day. As I said not really bad just out of sorts.

I'm very glad to hear that you had a normal immune reaction to your booster. That is what my husband, daughter & I experienced too - after having much more severe reactions to the first 2 doses. Apparently our bodies have become accustomed to this new vaccine.
Can you explain what you mean by "the powder form"? Was the vaccine mixed in your presence, or were you given information indicating the staff had mixed it on site?

@baz10
Hi,

My son in law who lives next door got the J &J…no reactions whatsoever. However, this was several months after he did test positive for Covid….some fatigue and loss of smell and taste for a few weeks after Covid and then after a week he was eating and painting the living room yet again. He is 57 and in excellent health.

Has no plans for a booster if FDA okayed.

Depends on the individual so you really can’t go by other people’s reactions unless you spot a similar trend in all of them.

I had Moderna 3rd shot last week. About same reaction I had to 2nd shot: slightly tired, slightly sore arm. That’s it! I know about 10 people who have also had a third Moderna shot. They all say effect pretty much the same as to 2nd.

@vickinevins I had Pfizer but my husband had Moderna and he has been putting the booster off thinking it wasn't approved yet. I will have to tell him he can get it now, I really want him to be safe, particularly since we will flying across the country soon to meet our new grandchild.
