Anyone develop worsened acid reflux ( GERD ) or a hernia post-covid?

My husband always had bad acid reflux issues and I had mild acid reflux. After covid, his acid reflux became so bad that he had to get surgery for that and for a new hernia. I also found out that I had developed a hernia post-covid and my acid reflux is now worse as a result. Doctor said that the excessive coughing and vomiting can cause a hernia.

I developed severe reflux and my understanding is covid also makes you susceptible to small intestine bacterial overgrowth. I asked my doctor for two weeks of cipro and it resolved significantly. I still had a little. I started taking black seed oil and it resolved almost completely. Occasionally I’ll have a little bit but never really bad. I take oregano oil too because there’s links with Epstein barr virus reactivation.

I had GERD before contracting Covid. My reflux became extremely worse, causing vomiting, acid coming clear up into my throat, and constant reflux. Upon testing with a tube down my throat for 24 hours, they found out I had acid reflux, but more non-acid reflux. After developing a hernia from all the reflux and vomiting, I had surgery to remove the hernia. Since then, I have no reflux at all. I no longer take any medicines for reflux. The surgery removed only one of my digestive symptoms. I still have multiple symptoms with my digestive system. I also have to watch what I eat, and make sure it does not get caught in my esophagus if it very soft.

I had COVID in Dec. 2020 at the age of 71. I am male. Since then, I have had chronic fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and an acute cough. My doctor recently confirmed a hernia, unrelated to any cause other than the cough.

My GERD was under control with medicine before Covid at the end of 2020. My reflux became so bad that anything I ate was coming back up in my throat. I went to an Acid Reflux Clinic near to my home. The reflux was so bad that I was coughing all the time and my food was getting stuck in my throat. They put a monitor down my throat to see what was causing all my issues. They found out I did have acid reflux at times, but most of the time it was non-acid reflux. They ended up doing surgery to remove my hiatal hernia and my reflux has gone away. It has been the one Covid symptom that has been completely corrected.

Hi. I have has post covid 2+ years- age 34.

My reflux was bad before, waking me up in the middle of the night choking on acid. What has helped me is a body support pillow that I sit up in bed with. I sit up for the first hour or two before sleeping in bed well, this is not ideal. It has help me tremendously, thank you for all your feedback. I am going to try taking oil of oregano and the other item you recommended.
Sending hope

I have noticed significant acid reflux post-Covid. This is always accompanied with nausea, but no vomiting, which is worse. I think if I could vomit I would likely feel better. Instead it ends up causing trouble in my GI tract- not pleasant. It is making me miserable. I eat smaller portions, (nothing greasy) in an attempt to avoid it but still I keep getting it. Tums helps a little but this is not a solution. Not sure what to do about this.

Had covid in January 2022. Developed the cough, fatigue and short of breath about 2 week after. Fatigue and shortness subsided in mid summer but cough remained but it was better. Had pneumonia in November and everything came back along with vertigo and hand tremors. Went to PCP, ENT, neurologist, pulmonary and finally thoracic and they found a small heital hernia so did a month worth of tests this past April and they believe the hernia is causing "silent reflux" which causes the cough but they said long covid could also be the problem or a combination of the two. So I'm now in pulmonary therapy where there is an emphasis on folks with long covid. Just started and hope it works.
