Blood in urine, young female: Testing not showing cause

Posted by user1515 @user1515, 2 days ago

Has anyone had blood in urine (Hematuria) that doctor could not find what’s wrong. I’ve had urine test (negative of infection), ultrasound of bladder and kidneys (normal), camera up urethra and bladder (normal), blood tests all normal including liver and kidney function) and still no ideas as to what’s causing the bleeding. Just wanting to know if anyone has had something similar before. I’m female in my 30s and healthy person. It’s been two weeks with blood in urine which changes from pink to sometimes brown.
Any help appreciated! TIA

I don’t have an answer for why this is happening, but I can tell you I’ve experienced the same thing over the years.
Started when I was in my early 40’s, I’m 65 now.
Same as you, I went through a battery of tests which did not show any reason for the blood.
Then over the years, my urine analysis would sometimes show blood. The doctor would retest in a month or two and the blood would be gone.
Just this February, while away on vacation, I had visible blood in my urine, very light pink. Since I was out of the country I did not feel comfortable going to a hospital, so I increased my water intake by quite a bit.
I saw my doctor when I got home and an initial urine culture showed I had a bladder infection, but further testing refuted that.
So I am back to square one. I have no illnesses to speak of, except osteoporosis, so no idea why this is happening.
I feel fine otherwise.
My gut tells me that if anything was wrong it would have shown up in one of the many tests I’ve had over the years.
You can’t fight an invisible foe, as long as you feel good and your tests are normal, don’t worry on it too much.
Just my opinion.
Take care,

My mother had trouble with that also.
It turned out to be one of her meds.
Read up my side affects of your meds. You might be able to figure it out you might need to change dosage.

Hello, @user1515, and welcome. It sounds like you’ve been proactive in searching for the cause of your hematuria. It must feel frustrating to go through all of that testing and not yet have any answers.

I've added your question to the Kidney & Bladder support group to include replies from additional members who have had similar experiences with hematuria and who understand what you are going through.

You might also be interested in this article from Mayo Clinic, which offers some additional ideas about what might be causing blood in your urine: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/blood-in-urine/symptoms-causes/syc-20353432.

Like @minnesota10 suggests, have you had any changes in the past 2 weeks, like medications? What has your doctor suggested as next steps?

Sorry I should have mentioned that I’m not on any medication and never have been in the past.

@user1515 I also want to welcome you to Mayo Clinic Connect. I agree with Kelly; it can be really frustrating to go through lots of tests and still not know the cause of a condition. Rest assured that while you are waiting for answers you are at least ruling out some things that are not the culprit. I have had hematuria several times and have undergone the same tests as you. Mine turned out to be UTI’s (bladder & kidney), possible kidney stones, the affects of having a bladder hook up in conjunction with my pancreas transplant. My bladder didn’t like having the transplanted pancreas attached to it causing pancreas digestive enzymes to irritate the bladder resulting in hematuria. This hook up was later changed in another surgery called an enteric conversion. Another later cause turned out to be staples from the two surgeries previously described and a hysterectomy before that. All of this went down when I was in my 40’s. I’m 68 now and still have hematuria show up on urine lab tests. But it isn’t visible by me, doesn’t cause any symptoms and I feel fine in regards to that. Please keep us posted on how you are doing?

I am not a doctor, but my sister has experienced this and found out she has Kidney Stones. They cause some blood in her urine. She just had a procedure done to dissolve the Kidney Stones. She went to a Urologist and he found the Kidney Stones.

Thanks for the info. I’m scheduled to have a urine analysis done in another month, I’ll mention this to my doctor as a possibility to explore.

I understand that. That is the reason why I google my meds. 2 years ago I was on one med to 11. Me and drugs don’t go well. I have major reactions to some mild one. That is the reason always do your homework and check all meds for side effects. When my folks were alive I checked their as well.
I am thankful for having these meds but we still have to be careful.
Have a great weekend.

@jaak @sondrachristo1 kidney stones crossed my mind, too! Would a CT scan or MRI of the kidneys show them up? I wonder too, if interstitial cystitis could be the cause …?
