Blood Clots

Posted by tiredcat @tiredcat, Jan 20 12:16am

I wrote a earlier question, regarding my boyfriend’s alcohol withdrawal. Thanks. One more question. He had several blood clots in his lungs and legs. Doctor told us the clots probably started in the legs and traveled to lungs. He’s on blood thinners. What’s keeping the Clots from going to the heart? I know the meds will thin blood, over time, the clots will resolve. May take months. I didn’t understand the doctor fully. What are the chances for this to happen? I feel like he’s a walking time bomb. He continues to be inactive, lays in bed most of time. no activity. Would there be symptoms. Or results of clot traveling to heart? A stroke An heart attack?

Hello @tiredcat, I know it's scary for you as well as your boyfriend with the blood clots. I have been on blood thinners now for almost 4 months due to a blood clot in my right leg and one in my lungs. The results from my last ultrasound a few weeks ago show that it is still not completely gone and I expect to be on blood thinners for at least 3 more months and possibly longer. Doctors can sometimes have difficulty explaining what's going on so that we can understand it so it's always good to ask questions and learn as much as you can about the condition. You might find this information on navigating life after thrombosis (also called a blood clot) – including prevention, treatment, and life implications from The North American Thrombosis Forum (NATF) helpful for learning more - https://thrombosis.org/patients/thrombosis-tips/.

You mentioned that your boyfriend continues to be inactive. My doctors have told me that I need to stay active and have some regular exercise. Are you able to get him into a treatment program or is he already in one?

Hi @l0lag0lag0b3, When my primary care team did an ultrasound of my leg at our local Mayo family clinic he wasn't able to tell whether or not I had a blood clot so he ordered a D-dimer test that morning and got the results back in the afternoon with really high numbers so he called and I made a trip to the ER where they did find a blood clot in my leg. I went home that night after 4 plus hours at the ER and was feeling pretty good but then sometime after midnight I started feeling short of breath and feeling some chest pain so went back to the ER and spend the next day and night in the hospital after they found a blood clot in the lungs. I wasn't experiencing any of the breathing or chest pain symptoms on my first trip to the ER so was extremely lucky how things played out.

Thanks for responding. He has agreed to allow physical therapy to come to his house starting tomorrow.
