Blocked or Clogged Bile Duct

Posted by lsheerin @lsheerin, Dec 17, 2025

Has anyone experienced a clogged bile duct after liver transplant? If so, what were your symptoms, how did they find it, and what was the treatment? I have all the symptoms and I'm having an MRI on Friday.

Thank you for remembering!! He had it done yesterday. MRI and MCRP. They said results next week. Waiting is horrible.

I'm so glad to hear that everything went well for both of you! Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season! 💖

I’m fortunate to be a patient at Mayo. It seems they get those scans back on the same day or within a couple of business days.

The blood tests, like CBC and metabolic, typically return results within the hour. They have their own labs. It makes the process so much smoother.

I am almost 7 years out from my transplant a month or so after the transplant I had the clogged bile duct. They cleaned it out ( not sure the correct term). And I had stents put in. I had the same surgery 3 times (every four weeks). And have not had an issue since. The last surgery over 6 years ago. I had a higher count of alkaline phosphates and developed a fever. Best wishes.

I'm 5 years out from my liver transplant. 3 weeks after my transplant I developed extreme abdominal pain and a fever like I'm talking 105. I was taken to Vancouver general hospital discovered that my bile duct had disintegrated and my abdomen was full of bile and I'd gone into sepsis shock. I had a bile duct bypass and cleaning and other than a few infections which actually resulted in sepsis again. I haven't had surgery since I had hernia surgery in March 2022.

Hi All and Happy New Year,
MRI showed and MRCP showed everything is normal. I thought for sure it was a clogged bile duct. All the symptoms were spot on. Now, I don't know what???
