BK Virus New Antibody

Posted by akiamate @akiamate, Jan 19 9:04pm

Hello everyone. I am new here and I had a kidney transplant in January of 2023. The BK virus reared its ugly head round September of last year. I had the ivig injection to lower the virus and it did definitely help. It was very low about a month ago (under 1000) but then it started to go back up (under 1800 which is still low).

Well I heard today that the Mayo Clinic has a trial BK Antibody treatment specifically designed to target the BK virus and clear it out. I could only find a few articles on it and it is said to be around 100X more effective than normal ivig injections because it was engineered to target the virus specifically.

Has anyone ever heard of this? It is definitely fantastic news!

I need this new antibody. I have had BK for more than a year. Please post the information on this site. I want to research it. I’m taking too much prednisone because of BK and it has bad side effects.

I talked with my team yesterday and I do not qualify for the trial right now because my BK numbers are so low at this point. If my BK numbers continue to go up, then I will be asked to participate.

But it takes 30 minutes for the injection and then they observe you for two hours. They do this once a week for 4 weeks.

@akiamate, Thanks for sharing what you learned about your team's response that you do not qualify for the clinical trial for BK virus treatment at the current time.
needed treatment.
How often will you be tested to monitor whether your BK numbers remain low or whether they go up? Do you live near the transplant dept?
