Biopsy test on new liver transplant

Anyone else have a biopsy on your new liver? What should I expect and what are they looking for and is it painful?

Had a fuller liver transplant a little over a year ago in Mayo AZ. Had 2 biopsies the first month. Some of my tests did not look quite right and they want to find if I was rejecting the new liver. I was not. It was precautionary . It was 100% easy and painless. Good luck !

I will probably be in line for the same procedure very soon.
My liver TP was 8-28-23, and my liver enzyme numbers are all headed above an acceptable range.
Look at your Lab Test results on your portal page for BUN, GFR, AST, ALP, Alk Phos (all can be found on your Comprehensive Metabolic Panel Lab results)
These are indicators of your liver function. Once they do the Biopsy, we'll see what condition the liver is really in.

I’ll let you know this all started after my hernia surgery with a 8x10” piece of mesh could be affecting it

My transplant was 10/20/20. My liver team at Mt. Sinai in NY had me coming in for nri / ct every 4 months. My blood every 2-3 months.as of today all results are clean. Just had blood and due for mri and ct .in A month which they r looking for any tumors. I had two cancerous tumors in liver before the transplant ..but my neds were played with.the tacrolimus can play on. Your kidneys. I too had hernia 6 mos after transplant and Dr. Also put in mesch on left side. I am off taco and on sirolimus
My side effect is soars in mouth......I look now at my GFR numbers all others r good. A lot happens they don't tell u about. Good luck to u and all of us. This is a journey I never expected in a million years to experience .....never drank booze or drugs..or any hepatitis...I was shocked beyond belief.but my primary doctor ignored my failing liver symptoms for a long time at the end of this story liver was failing I had actites....swollen legs.. blue marks on arms .itchy rashes.he told me blue marks r because of age. Go home elevate your legs...take benadryl for itchy rash.i went to my gastrointestinal dr.a month later she looked at blood results my symptoms and said it's your liver. She sent me ASAP for mri and ct.and results were cirrhosis I was at Mt. Sinai in 30 days within 9 mos. I had transplant. This is a journey only we can experience

In my experience, there is a liver biopsy soon after the transplant as a final check after the transplant surgery. It is the only way to see/examine and check the liver tissue. And the only disomfort is the pressure that is applied to the abdomen to get the sample tissue. I remember having 3 samples taken, which meant 3 pokes with a special needle. I also had a local numbing shot so I didn't feel that (just the pressure). You will not feel anything in the liver because the nerves of the new liver are not connected.
It will take a few days to get the results. I hope all goes well for you. Try to relax, and listen to the doctor as he explains what he is doing.

My wife had a biopsy just a month ago, as some of her numbers where going up too high. The biopsy was done through a vien in her neck and went smoothly. There were no signs of rejection, but a infection was present, Prediszone was prescribed, and one med VALG......, something was started up again, basically restarting the meds that she had after surgery this past January. Everything has come back in line, and she is back to getting better day by day. You will do fine. You got this!
