Bergamot
Has anyone tried Bergamot supplements to lower lipids? I have been reading about it and Bergamot is a citrus fruit from Italy. It is included in the Mediterranean diet but it is very difficult to find in USA as a fruit unless you get supplements. Studies have found it lowers the lipid levels drastically without the side effects that statins and non-statins lipid lowering drugs do. I live in Virginia and there is a Naturopathic physician who lives in Washington DC who is using it and his patients with high lipid levels have been using it with great results. I don’t go to naturopathic physicians but it seems Bergamot works. I am not a pill person and try to avoid them as necessary. I have been doing the Mediterranean diet for quite some time now and it is lowering my cholesterol, triglycerides, increasing my HDL but my LDL is stuck in 137 which is high and Bergamot works with LDL very well. I just wanted to know if anyone is being trying Bergamot supplements and if it is truly working. Let me know. Thank you.

@dtag53 I don't have any fish allergies. I have gout! The fish oil capsules (Vescepa) are doctor-prescribed and it also heals after my gastrointestinal illness.
I don't know why you are saying that but I certainly don't have an allergy to fish. I eat it all the time. Now, I just eat the correct kind. You can take fish oil because it is without purines.
"Purified fish oil does not contain purines. While the flesh of the fish contains purines, highly purified and molecularly distilled fish oil is essentially free of them. This means fish oil supplements are generally considered safe for individuals with gout or high uric acid, and can even help reduce joint inflammation. For the safest and most concentrated intake, opt for pharmaceutical-grade, molecularly distilled fish oil to ensure all impurities are removed. @loriesco All I said was I could not eat the fish nor take fish oil supplements. No doctor can guarantee that I won't have an allergic reaction. I can't vomit for 8 hours and throw up blood after an hour to "test" my fish allergies. I can't risk it.
@loriesco And since I don't have gout, purines are of no consequence to me. It is the fish that I am allergic to. And yes, purines may be removed from fish oil capsules, but allergens are not removed.

1 Reaction@dtag53 That is not what you said. Maybe that is what you meant to say. You said: "@loriesco It's had when you have a fish allergy! Even eliminates fish oil capsules....."
So maybe you were just speaking about YOURSELF and YOUR allergies. But people should be clear on the science.
You can always try PLANT based iomegas! Or you could have eaten some bad fish. In any case, it sounds like you need to personally stay away from whatever you and your doctor think is appropriate for your needs.
@dtag53 weird. I don't even know why my comment is here. I was responding to inflammation and gout and now I see it is listed under "Bergamont?" Bizzare. Of course it all makes no sense now. 😉
@loriesco I was tested, and indeed I have fish allergies. And plant based doesn't do what fish oil does, I've tried.
@dtag53 I don't think the fish oil does much for me either! Only eating the real fish lowers my cholesterol and triglycerides. An interesting side bar was the gastroenteritis I had a few weeks ago. the fish oil is supposed to calm the digestive/intestinal tract to promote healing. (Google said! 😉
@loriesco Sometimes I really wonder what docs really know, and what they are just trying on us! I have severe "arthritis" in my hands, but the strange thing, arthritis meds do nothing. I am finally in to see a rheumatologist, she suspects I may have an arthritic type of lupus, so that's the path she is checking out. I hope she finds something to help, hands are becoming non-functional. So sad, I have too much life left!
@dtag53 Oh, that is difficult! It took years and 3 different rheumatologists before I got a correct diagnosis and medication.
Have you looked in to any of our discusstions about lupus or other autoimmune conditions?
