Bergamot

Has anyone tried Bergamot supplements to lower lipids? I have been reading about it and Bergamot is a citrus fruit from Italy. It is included in the Mediterranean diet but it is very difficult to find in USA as a fruit unless you get supplements. Studies have found it lowers the lipid levels drastically without the side effects that statins and non-statins lipid lowering drugs do. I live in Virginia and there is a Naturopathic physician who lives in Washington DC who is using it and his patients with high lipid levels have been using it with great results. I don’t go to naturopathic physicians but it seems Bergamot works. I am not a pill person and try to avoid them as necessary. I have been doing the Mediterranean diet for quite some time now and it is lowering my cholesterol, triglycerides, increasing my HDL but my LDL is stuck in 137 which is high and Bergamot works with LDL very well. I just wanted to know if anyone is being trying Bergamot supplements and if it is truly working. Let me know. Thank you.

I do 1:1 dilution. 30 mins before meal. 1-3 times per day.

How much do you take before each meal?

Not bergamot but Costco in my area is selling berberine as an alternative to cholesterol lowering meds. Of course, any supplements should be shared with cardiologist. A cursory review showed it can interact with BP meds and cholesterol meds. My guess is that taken safely it provides a preventative effect for patients without significant disease.

Hello everyone
I have been trying citrus bergamot Phytosome ( super absorption ) from the brand Super nutrition that you can buy easily on internet.
It works from first day, with a significant belly fat (vat) reduction.
All the others supplements NON Phytosome I try it didn't work at all.
Give it a try and stay safe everyone.

I have been using statins for about a year and a half, I had back surgery almost 3 years ago and the pain iny back I feel is there a lot and more so after the statins. Have you found a good way to reduce the cholesterol without statins? I was curious about the bergamonte but finding as bad results as good

I have been taking Pitavastatin 1mg for quite a while. So far no side effects but my cardiologist told me that if any side effects started to bother me to the point of discontinuing the statin, there are other meds thatcare not statins but have other side effects such as Gout, kidney issues including urinary retention and stomach problems. I will stay with the statin and see how it works. I am taking it with CoQ10 at night. I am still skeptical to use statins but I have high risk with high LDL, high Lipoprotein A (269) and high cholesterol. Also my parents had heart problems. Sorry that your back pain came back. Stay well.

@naiviv Hello, I too read about the benefits of bergamot and tried it for a year, along with modifying my diet - it had zero effect on my LDL, which continued to rise.
Now I have tried 3 different statins, and had unacceptable side effects with each, so awaiting a referral to cardiology for further testing to see what my actual risks are, and whether I might be a candidate for one of the newer, non-statin drugs.

Can I ask what side effects you had on statins? What did you end up taking instead?

I started with pitavastatin 1 mg taking it every 3 days per my cardiologist. So far I haven’t got any side effects but unfortunately I sprained my ankle pretty bad recently so now I am not sure if my muscle discomfort is due to the use of a special boot and walking with effort or the statin. I don’t feel pain at all now like before. Maybe taking the statin every 3 days lessens its side effects. Anyway I will keep taking the statin and see what happens. I have a high risk of cardiac events due to my parents’ cardiac history. The cardiologist talk to me about other options including injectable meds and I did my research and didn’t like them at all. As a matter of fact my husband’s cardiologist prescribed him one of those injectables and I had to take him to the ER because it caused him shortness of breath, palpitations and I thoughtc he was having a heart attack! 😳 The cardiologist told him to stop the medication.
Then I kept doing research and found out that it is INFLAMMATION that causes issues in the arteries. So much information out there drives anyone crazy!

I started with muscle aches and heaviness, progressed to muscle spasms and then severe cramps in legs, thighs, arms and shoulders. After diagnosis of a heart blockage and other irregularities, I was prescribed Repatha to lower my LDL, which I have been using with only minor side effects for 7 months.

Niacin, bergamot and several other supplements I have forgotten had no effect for me, my numbers continued to rise.

I can’t be injected with Repatha because I am allergic to LATEX (one of its warnings). I am a retired RN and was exposed to Latex gloves decades ago and acquired the Latex allergy.

Please write and tell them. My daughter had the same issue with one of her biologics, and they must have heard enough complaints because they changed their injector.
