BCG and UTIs: Anyone else get urinary tract infections?

Posted by wohali @wohali, Mar 26, 2025

I had one BGG treatment and have been unable to continue because of persistent UTIs. It's one antibiotic after another and none help. Anyone else in this situation? I am an 86 year old male and want to get on with my treatment.

@hummelb99 Hi, I almost always would get a UTI from the use of the catheter after my Gem/Doc. I keep a supply of Cephalexen just for this purpose.
Recently my GP suggested I take a preventative dose, 1 daily during the Gem/Doc treatments.
I have a good supply of these antibiotics at the ready.
But my Urologist suggested I use Hiprex which is a UTI suppressant & not an antibiotic, so will go with that to see how that works.
I know how distressing this can be.
Good luck

@mochat - Hello and thank you very much for your advise and information that you also experienced UTIs after chemo. I was taken by surprise.
I am waiting for the urine culture to see which antibiotics to take and will ask my urologist about the Hibrex, which is more appealing to me.
Thank you again and best of luck for your journey.

@hummelb99 yes it’s a minefield this journey.
But…..after the chem/doc treatments and some maintenance doses, I have been cancer free now for just over 12 months.
All the best 😊

This is music to my ears and what I am hoping for.
Thank you for these encouraging words.
May I ask, if after your initial chemo treatments and first your cystoscope, was it a BL blue light cystoscope, or just a normal one?
When I requested the BL cystoscope, I was told, it wasn’t the protocol.
Happy Weekend
