Barrett’s esophagus

Posted by jvanstratten @jvanstratten, Mar 22, 2018

Looking for info and help with Barret’s esophagus. I can’t figure out just how serious this is. I have read way too much online! I don’t really know how strict my diet really has to be. It is really stressful-. Does anyone here have it? And exactly how serious is it?

Pdilly, glad to hear you didn't have pain after the RF Ablation. Hope your next Ablation goes ok!

I went to the GI doc today and he said I'll have another egd and colonoscopy done in 3 years from today. He said the reason they don't oblate the early Barrett's is because it doesn't do anything for it. They only will oblate if there is low or high grade dysplaisa. Mine is in the early stage is what he told me. He liked it that I went from 200# on Dec-20-18 to 177# today. He also told me to cut down on the water intake. So I'll stick with the strict diet and hopefully all will remain stable. I'm not going to go below 175# seeing how I bought some new clothes.

Barrett's esophagus(BE) could be bad if left untreated and it progresses to BE with Dysplasia then BE with H-Grade Dysplasia and finally cancer. What stage are you at? Each person diet restrictions varies.I can eat spicy foods with no problem but chocolate especially at night is bad. Again for me, smaller but more frequent meals work. The last time I was scoped which was in December I didn't have BE, but 2 years ago I had BE with Hi-Grade Dysplasia. If no BE in June hopefully I can just be scoped annually. I can say that the treatment I have received at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester has been fantastic. Good luck with your treatment.

Hi Dave. What treatment did they put you on?

Hi Dave… I’ve had it for years. Initially I was on acid reducing meds which worked for a few years. Try to stay away from spicey foods and other things that cause heartburn.
After mine got pretty bad (I had food actually come up because my esophageal sphincter wasn’t closing at all, they did a Nissan Fundoplication on me where they wrapped the upper part of my stomach around my esophogas, so neither acid nor food would come up into my esophagus. The one problem I have now, is that I can’t throw up. That initially sounds awesome until your body tries to and can’t and then I’m in horrendous pain with the heaving and have to wait until my body can release the nausea some other way. Try to head it off early and watch what you eat/drink.

@afrochic 1st treatment for Barrett's was in 1/2015 in a local hospital where they did a Biopsy, and RFA without removing a node in my esophagus . when the biopsy can back the area around the node had hi-grade dysplasia. Was told I couldn't have treatment locally so I went to Mayo. Because of the RFA had to wait til 7/2015 to have the Mucosal resection and another RFA done along with another biopsy which again showed Hi-Grade Biopsy. So,for the next 2 years went to Mayo every 3 months for a scope and RFA. A year ago only a scope since no Barrett's was visible so went to wait for 6 Mo.. Last visit was in July and the scope was clear so next visit moved out to a year from then

One thing I do is I stop eating at 3pm everyday. I do this so when I go to bed I have no food in my system for me to get acid reflux. So far I've had no acid reflux.

I have Barrett's Esophagus, have had it since around 2012 I think, but I guess mine must be very mild. I am just on 20mg of omeprazole a day and things are good. I have been told the restrictions — coffee, acid type foods, etc., but my gastro did say that I could have a cup of coffee in the morning if I wanted it, so I do. So far no problem. I am due for an endoscopy soon so I hope it is still the same.

Let us know your results after the egd. I've been buying health wise coffee from Amazon.
PH is 6.18 which is very low acid. Not bad tasting either.

@riflemanz64 Thanks. I just went to Amazon and put a 12 pack in my shopping cart to try it out.

I use a bunn drip coffee maker which is about a 10 cup pot and I only use 3 tablespoons of coffee for it. You don't need much with this coffee.
