Bariatric Surgery & Weight Loss: Meet others & Share

Posted by Amanda Burnett @amandaa, Jun 24, 2022

Welcome to the Bariatric Surgery & Weight Loss group, a space for support, practical information, and answers to your questions from members like you about bariatric surgery, weight-related medical conditions, weight loss and healthy living. I am Amanda and I will be your moderator for this group. I have had the surgery myself and have a very real and close connection to the topic.

Pull up a chair and a healthy snack and let’s chat. Why not start by introducing yourself? What’s your story?

Hello, my name is Stacie. Currently reside in Wisconsin. I have 4 dogs and just got a kitten.
I have my consultation tomorrow, so I'm brand new to this. I've never had surgery before either.
My current weight is 285 lbs and when I moved here 7 years ago I was between 170-175. The weight gain is recent, within the last 3 years. I do have depression and anxiety so I'm sure that takes a toll. I love taking photos, it's like a quick little memory. But now I refuse to have photos of myself. I have a great support system and great friends who I know don't care. Yet I'm the one who feels this way and avoids being seen. My goal is to get back to where I was when I moved here and stay there. I've cut out most everything I enjoy except my morning coffee. That will be the hardest part for me cause I live for coffee. I feel I'm ready to do what's necessary to meet my goals but I know I'll have questions. I look forward to being able to chat in the future.

Welcome @turberg. There are a few discussions in the group about weight gain after initial loss, for example:
- Weight Gain after Weight Loss Surgery. Let's support each other https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/weight-gain-regain-after-weight-loss-surgery/
- How successful where you after bariatric surgery? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/how-successful-where-you-after-sugery/

Two steps forward and one step back is still moving forwards, right? What motivates you to reach your goal?

Thank you for the welcome! I will check out those discussions. I am personally motivated to lose weight for my health. This year I will turn 56 years old...the same age my mother was when she passed away 19 years ago. I want to be healthy and strong so I can live a longer life with my husband and chidren.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Liz, I live in Northwest Florida (Destin) on the beautiful emerald coast. I am traveling to Mayo in Jacksonville for my surgery in September with Dr. Bowers to fix a failing nissen fundoplication by doing a bypass.

Excited and nervous. Hoping to find new friends here close by for support and friendship.

Hello! My name is Tamie and I live in Eau Claire, WI. I am almost 56 years old and am a retired home school and substitute teacher. Ten years ago, I had a Sleeve Gastrectomy and lost 90 pounds! I felt great, but was unable to reach my weight loss goal of 135 pounds. Unfortunately, during the past 5-6 years, I have gained back 40 of the 90 pounds that I had lost. So, now I need to lose 85 pounds to reach my goal! Fortunately, I have been approved for a second bariatric surgery and am considering getting the Gastric Bypass (Royx-En-Y.) Since I did lose 90 pounds before with the Sleeve, I am considering this as well. I am looking forward to participating in this group, as I didn't have this type of support 10 years ago when I had my initial surgery!

Stomach expands in time. I had the RNY. Was 320 in 2016. Now 185
RNY works better over time.

That's an incredible weight loss! Congratulations! I'm certain to do the RNY this time, then. Thank you!
