It went well. I like Dr. Linnaus. She explained all options thoroughly. Answered all my questions thoroughly. It did help having my sister there because she understood the procedure and was able to tell her experience what worked, what didn't. She had the sleeve done, but with my acid reflux I opted for the Roux-en-Y bypass. I have all my appts setup so I'm excited about that.
Hi, @valgeorge - wondering how your surgical consult went? Was it helpful to have your sister with you?
@matthewmayer
You have same concerns many overweight people have. As someone else suggested, make an appointment with your primary to discuss weight and ask for a referral to Bariatric Surgery dept. Both Mayo Health Systems and Mayo MN, FL and AZ have programs. They will work with you to make lifestyle changes needed before and after surgery.
Excess skin is a problem for anyone who losses weight. Most plastic surgeons recommend you wait till weight is lost and stable for months after the loss.
Are you doing any exercise to increase your ability to be more active?
@matthewmayer
Are you moving to have surgery before exploring all other options and treatments?
If you are a Mayo patient, you probably have a primary care doctor. Get an appointment with them and go over all options, etc. He can also refer you to their doctors who specialize in weight loss.
I would also ask about counseling and seeking counseling on this also. I am doing this and found great insight.
Good luck!
I am, but I know that there’s a protocol on how to begin the specific process for surgery. I know with insurance that requires counseling and other hoops to have to jump through.
@matthewmayer
Are you a patient at Mayo Clinic? They have many programs for weight loss both from physical side and counseling side.
I need some advice. I am 53 years old and I had that band surgery 20 years ago. I lost 127 pounds on it. The flat band got infected and I put 161 pounds back on. My girlfriend ironically is a surgeon at Mayo, although not in this department. I have diabetes. That’s very difficult to manage right now, I have sleep apnea, I have low self-esteem, and a couple other issues. She is certain that the roux-en-y, is my only true option.
I did lose a significant amount of weight again on a high protein type of diet. It was 442 pounds and I’m now 282 pounds. But I’ve been fighting for quite some time to get more weight off. I would like to lose at least another hundred pounds. But I just seem to be completely unsuccessful.
Side effects that I’m reading about truly scare me, but I feel like I don’t have a choice. I haven’t only seen anybody with current additions to this blog that are having side effects. My surgeon girlfriend is static that it is much different now than it used to be as much more safe.
I want to try to make this as PG as possible, but I’m also looking forward to having skin surgery because I want to have a better intimate life with my girlfriend. I’m not complaining in that area per se. I think she’s an amazing lover. I just think that there are more things that we could do in enjoying each others body than what we are capable of because of my weight.
I will mention that my girlfriend is equally diabetic, and she’s lost 110 pounds on Mounjaro. I’m jealous while insecure because I feel like I’m gonna lose her at some point if I don’t step up and do what I know is right even though I’m scared to death.
This is not about doing for somebody else, this is about doing for myself, to make myself happy, and putting the person that I love in a position to enjoy my body, and see me more confident.
We’re on a mission trip right now and her and some of the doctors and other people were hiking and I could not get up on the rock next to her. There are other people standing around taking their pictures. And I was absolutely hurt to my core that I could not do that with her.
I’m tired of feeling left out and giving myself table scraps. Not in my girlfriend, but in things I’m able to do. I don’t feel like this is living. I feel like this is merely existing.
I don’t even know how to start the process at Mayo—can anyone guide me in that direction?
What are your thoughts?
@valgeorge
Good idea bringing your sister, maybe the two of you can create a list of questions you have prior to appointment.
Please keep us informed.
Hi @lisalucier , I have my initial consult with a surgeon this Friday. Excited and nervous. I'm taking my sister with me. She had gastric bypass several years ago and has been doing great maintaining her weight loss.
Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @valgeorge. I hear you on maintaining weight loss. It's a real challenge.
You mentioned you are just starting a bypass journey. What step of that are you on now ( e.g., researching bypass, enrolling in a program)?
